Valve has their reasons for cutting stuff. She may seem cool on paper but she might have been lame in practice. Like all those cut weapons that were either redundant or impractical.
>>
>>315827921
Or the Hydra shown at the end of the E3 "Tunnels" video-- or, pretty much an entire game's worth of content. Just like with Half-Life 1, Half-Life 2 was rebuilt almost from the ground up halfway through development and became radically different from what was originally envisioned. The book "Raising the Bar" really puts this into perspective for both games.

http://www.moddb.com/mods/missing-information/news/missing-information-greenlit-on-steam

>We are pleased to say that Missing Information has been approved through Steam's Greenlight program! In just two short weeks after submitting the mod, we reached 14th place on Greenlight's top 100 and got final approval on October 1. This will allow us to fix bugs and push out updates sooner than before rather than having our fans worry about downloading patches in archives. Thank-you to everyone who voted for us.

>So obviously this means that despite what some people on the internet would have you believe, the project is not dead. Real life took priority for many of us after 1.6, but the hiatus from the mod has done us some good. Most of the old gang is back together along with some new faces and we are working hard on porting everything over to our new Steam version. The first release will be a fixed version of Missing Information 1.6 ported to the Source 2013 engine which will resolve all the missing texture issues caused by the SteamPipe update. We will also have some new maps included in this version. The first of these is "Streetwar" which is a combat map based on an old City 17 map with architecture that never found its way into the final game. The next is "Terminal" which is an adaptation of Team GabeN's elusive fix that features the gloomy City 17 atmosphere that everyone loves so much.

>As well, for those who were worried about us selling out like Black Mesa did, this mod will remain a free download on Steam.

I don't know, I kind of like that sort of thing. Items, or even mechanics, unique to a specific area can make said area feel more special. RE4 is full of stuff like that. The castle's cannon is only fired once, the thermal scope is only used for like 6-7 enemies in the entire game, pretty sure there's only one area where you encounter basses, you only get to play as Ashley for a short segment, and so on. But because of it, those areas stand out and is something I still remember.

I like Xen. I appreciated how different it felt, both in terms of visuals and gameplay. Sure, the first-person platforming can get annoying, but I never felt like they overdid it. Half-Life 2 suffered, in my eyes, from not having any alien environments.

Why doesn't Valve make HL3 but add really amazing multiplayer on the side so they can consistently make money off it?
>>
>>315832142
They already have 2 multiplayer FPS games printing them money constantly with no effort required
>>
>>315832318
>They already have 2 multiplayer FPS games
But they could have THREE
>>
>>315832142
According to some leaks that may very well be what's happening.
>>
>>315832318
They've also got Dota 2 to go along with those two. There isn't really a need for multiplayer in HL3, but I wouldn't mind if they made co-op official (think Synergy but intergrated into the game.)

>>315832424
Oh, you.
>>
>>315832424
But making a third one would require effort and work, something that they haven't been very good at for the past 4 years
>>
I think the reason I like HL more than HL2 is that the latter is so overly polished. It's like they went through it with a nail file, removing any and all bumps and imperfections, until nothing but a smooth surface remained. It made the game feel less human; less living. It's more like you're just watching events unfold, from your designated seat, than you actually taking part in any of them. Even with all the physics of HL2, I was never impressed in the same way I was during the air duct segment in 1, when the soldiers shoot holes through it in front of you and you end up falling out of it. Or when you test fired the rocket engine, or launch the rocket, or just stepping out through the pipe into the canyon. A game needs to have a few ups and downs. If there's no traction, there's nothing for you to overcome.
>>
>>315832652
>>315832519
>>315832318
I highly doubt Valve spent five years making a new engine just to have Dota 2 and CSGO ported through it, even they don't require it at all

Source 2 is going to be completely free to use as well, so it's not like they're going for royalties from people making their games with Source 2
>>

Now that you mentioned it, Source 2 might be able to revive some old mods.

What mods do you want to be revived via a Source 2 remake, /v/? I personally want Zombie Master and that one mod that had ridiculous space combat and fighting inside the ships. There was also another one with some sort of cyber-space gimmick that I vaguely remember playing.
>>
>>315833441
They'll want something else to act as a flagship, though. Something more substantial. Remember how they whored out Half-Life 2, in order to showcase Source?

It's funny, the only thing that doesn't feel over-designed is the damn gravity gun. It has such limited use outside of very specific situations (like the manhacks). And, for some stupid reason, pressing G (or whatever key it was) to switch to it still puts it in your history, so you end up switching to it using Q. I ended up just shooting most boxes instead of using the gravity gun or crowbar, just because I couldn't be arsed re-selecting the two weapons I wanted active afterwards.

I dunno, I felt the Gravity Gun was pretty good as long as you had a prop that wouldn't break upon hitting an enemy once. It was a fantastic ammo-saver and I personally love going through Ravenholme using nothing but the Gravity Gun since it's full of sawblades and shit that causes fire.
>>
>>315825792

Also, it has more merit if it's a recent game, or recent news SLIGHTLY related to games.
>>
>>315836072
I feel like they made the guns so unsatisfactory precisely to get people to use the gravity gun and PhysicsTM to solve every situation.

Hell, they even force you to do it eventually.
>>
>>315836610
I'd say Ravenholme is pretty specific, since it was clearly built for use with the gravity gun (there's even an achievement to beat that section without shooting), and doesn't really play like any other part of the game. Oh, and I do the same; it's a lot of fun to saw blade your way through zombies. But against Combines? It's easier to just shoot them. Or headcrabs? Not worth the effort as they die too quickly. Moving explosive barrels is too risky during fights. It's really just against manhacks, during puzzles and in Ravenholme I use it.

>>315836935
I think it was an issue of streamlining. They didn't want two weapons that might overlap, so every individual weapon had to fill a larger scope by itself. This means they can't be hyper specific, and just feels of generic as a result.

It's actually pretty decent against Combine provided you're in close distance and have a good prop (file cabinet, toilet, etc.) since it one-shots them. More often than not I'd swap to the Gravity Gun indoors if I found anything that I could punt at people and it'd work very well.

I can agree that it's shit against headcrabs, though.

>According to the book Raising the Bar, Valve's Ken Birdwell had a friend whose 12-year-old brother, Ted Backman, used to draw. Ken had always liked his work, so while searching for a concept artist several years later, he asked Backman to provide a couple of sketches for possible monsters. He presented sketches of several very sexual-oriented monsters to him and Gabe Newell, managing director, the kind of material Birdwell did not expect. Among them was "Mr. Friendly" displaying an obvious penis. When questioned about it, Backman described that the creature would use its tentacled arms to pull the player towards itself until the point of fatal copulation. Birdwell was worried that Newell wouldn't approve of this material, but it turned out that was exactly what he was looking for. Newell and Backman then began a discussion about possible psycho-sexual alien behaviors and clinical descriptions of disturbed adolescent sexual fantasies. The sexual themes of some of these enemies were intended to elicit a response from the innate homophobia of 14-year-old boys, a significant portion of the targeted audience for the game

Give it its own physics effects to show off technology that no other weapons use. Have it crack bones and tear chunks of meat out of enemies rather than inexplicably leaving a bullet hole.

If an enemy like, say, a bipedal robot were introduced, you could climb onto its back, pry off its paneling and tear the wires loose. Make it the most viable weapon against certain enemies, and make it more specialized than just a last resort. Give it its own job other than saving bullets.

Those charge attacks are great fun.

It's what it sounds like. Adds a bunch of gore features and stuff, in ways you wouldn't expect from the HL1 engine.
Just google it man.

You should try Cry of Fear anon :)

Too bad it was too hard for new players to get into so it slowly died out and NS2 is bad compared to the first one

Haven't played either, what's so bad about the second one?
>>

I agree with you. I hated Xen back when I played half life for the first time in '99. And while it's not the best part of the game I actually liked this time around, platforming isn't perfect but it has some neat and interesting visuals. Half Life 2 should have had something that expanded this weird alien world.

I'm really in love with Opposing Force now, it feels like a sequel instead of an expansion pack

She made it into the Japanese arcade game. Which is shit btw. I had the pleasure of playing it while studying abroad.
>>
>>315846707
nothing is wrong with it really

it just went the way of Shattered Horizon and the other multiplayer only shooters that came out, were good but not amazing enough to hold an audience.

I love this fucking ideas. Make the crowbar slower but with a pack of damage to deal, better animations and sound and also you can use it to crack enemies wide open
>>
>>315847324
Well there goes my interest in it
Care to explain why its shit?
>>
>>315846707
Removed bunnyhopping which was one of the most fun things about the game for me

Long loading times and bad performance overall didn't help. Also didn't like using darkness as a part of the gameplay

It's expensive(like any arcade game in Japan). The sensitivity on the controls is bad and you're trying to play an FPS with two joysticks and two pedals. I also saw it crash once and then a guy came by to reboot it. It runs on Windows XP. You also have to play it a lot to level up the class you play and are limited to one per game card. I still have mine somewhere.
>>
>>315850105
>It runs on Windows XP
I wonder if there's a version of it floating around somewhere
>>
>>315834836
It was never supposed to be an Episode 3 tech demo, and it's still a spin-off.
>>
>>315850287
There's a cracked copy of it on a private tracker I'm on

>>
>>315850504
I assume it's cracked so you can make your own servers? Cause otherwise the game will constantly try to stick with ones in Japan and I bet they've been taken offline by now.
>>
>>315850287
There ought to be. A bunch of resources were ripped from the game earlier this year IIRC.

I don't know, if you make campaign game with fun-ass guns and rather fast movement like half-life has, it's almost a waste to not slap on a multiplayer mode while you're already at it. Even though HL2DM was broken it was fun as fuck to play with friends, and now if they add in more gravity-gun type mechanics it would be even more fun.

The vorts at the beginning of Episode One are the "kin" of the Vort from Episode 2 during the mine area with Griggs and Sheckley, right? I think G-Man implies it, atleast.

Neat theory, anyway. I can appreciate that you're trying to keep this thread alive, as well.
>>
If headcrab zombies are "mawmen" then what are headcrabs?
>>
>>315858582
But why does the G-Man prize Alyx?
>>
>>315860403
Probably for some reason that'll be explained in the next game.
>>
>>315860403
because alyx is eli's daughter?
because eli is pretty much the leader of the resistance?
because eli and gordon are linked to black mesa?
