From my studies, Europeans coming over didn't understand a lot of the African forms of servitude, and basically lumped it in with chattel slavery, convinced local tribes they were gonna help convert anyone sold to them to Christianity, then used them for cheap labor.
I find it interesting whenever someone goes "but Egypt and Africa had slaves" when the servitude systems in Africa and Egypt were different than the European and American slavery systems.

Whether you bought them from members of the same race is irrelevant information concerning the morality of slavery and slave ownership.
