Vanilla XCOM is great, but too easy. The problem with Long War is that it doesn't just make the game harder, it makes the game so hard that you'll get completely destroyed if you don't play it the way the mod creator plays it.
Playing on Classic Ironman with a bunch of Second Wave options and a mod which increases the size and number of alien squads is about perfect IMO.
