What are some other massive blunders where the company tried to hide all actual gameplay from the customers until they had bought it?

I remember SW:TOR, they didn't allow anyone to touch it outside of their own gameplay demos, until the 1.5 hour video leaked and everybody realized how shit it actually was (where the 29:30 meme with the animations came from).
EA's stock crashed and burned and their financials tanked in the months after the SW:TOR blunder. It took over a year for them to recover, and only thanks to smartphone games.

you'd have to be stupid to have thought it would be great.

>even on /v/

as if /v/ isn't full of infantile kids/teens who have no idea how anything works and haven't been around long enough to know bad shit when they see it from a mile away.

It was obvious that there was never anything good about SWTOR. Incredibly obvious.

In November 2011, a month before SW:TOR launched, EA's stock was trading at ~$25 a piece
In July 2012, 6 months after SW:TOR launched, EA's stock reached its lowest point at ~$11 a piece, more than a 50% drop in 6 months.

EA only recovered because of smartphones and games like Real Racing 3 and Plants vs Zombies 2 making them huge amounts of money on iPhones.

You can do the laziest shit. I know DSP is hated here, but he has been the victim of this. People found fan art he uses in videos and simply prove that it existed somewhere else before it was in his video and it's an automatic take down for 2 weeks while youtube reviews it. Youtube is scared of legal copy right stuff so they do this really broken shit that is easily taken advantage

Got banned from the steam Fallout 4 forums for posting a live stream link of the PC version in a thread with a guy saying "the current screenshots are fake and no one has actually played the game for real"

I was promptly banned for "link spam" even though I only posted it once, huge damage control.
>>
>>315379243
Well gee, it's not like this has never happened before.

I'm lying, this happens all the time when people throw out gameplay footage before release and/or embargo. Hell, some companies go one step further and do the same for games that have already been out for years, like Sega, or Konami, or Nintendo.

Honestly, what are companies going to do if someone posts a review of a leaked game before the embargo is up?

Oh no, we won't send him a copy of our next game that he doesn't need because he pirated it, that'll show him!

As long as its not hosted on somewhere an automated copyright claim will get it taken down like jewtube.

>>
>>315383153
simple, review sites get a list of what to do/not to do and have to obey that list or never get a review copy again.

IE Nintendo review rules is you can't talk about any secrets in the game and only what is publicly known(So for Smash they could only talk about the starting roster+lucina)

More hands in the game the worse the rules(Look up FIFA review rules and notice how long the list is)

>>315383356
Not legally enforceable but instead closer to private agreements. If lets say IGN breaks the rules EA set for peggle 2, EA can't really sue IGN but can demand the review be taken down and modified. If IGN doesn't comply then IGN is simply never getting another review copy and if they want to make a review they would be buying a copy on release

>>315383356
If you break embargo you don't get blacklisted by that publisher, you get blacklisted by EVERY publisher. If you work for a website, they get blacklisted if they don't immediately fire you, if you are a solo 'tuber or twitcher or whatever that's the last review copy you are getting from anyone ever again.

You only get to break embargo once in your career. You don't get a second chance because you stop getting review copies.

Bethesda forced them to release F:NV prematurely before the bugs were fixed and then didn't give them their 85-metacritic bonus (they had 84) forcing Obsidian to fire a lot of its staff and making basically no money on the game

If that isn't a reason to boycott a company I don't know what is, I've stopped buying companies' games for less (e.g. Rome 2's launch scam, another game where actual gameplay wasn't allowed to be shown before launch)

Its just fucking stupid that reviers get the copies two whole weeks before the game comes out. A game with this much hype was bound to get leaked. I used to do that in the past. I got burned pretty hard on a game that was a huge buggy mess and it deleted my savefiles all the time weeks after launch. I never bougth a game on launch ever again after that. Only expection is Shovel Knight.

Pirating is a different beast, it's illegal here and people actually care. I look up reviews, demos an other stuff to get a good impression of the game before I buy it. It also is usually around 5-25 eurobucks so I don't regret it if the game is not as good. No need to "demo" the game and purchase it later if I feel it was worthy the money. My most expensive game on Steam in the last 4 years was Risen 1 for 30€.

The big difference from then to now is that most games back then were good and worth the launch money. Not the case anymore and especially because the games are buggy messes. Bought Pillars of Eternity a few days ago and there are still annyoing and commen bugs. As good as the game is right now, the industry doesn't make it easy on me anymore to justify buying a full priced title on launch. What is questionable though is that people still complain at some of the cheap game prices on Steam and go to shady sites like G2A and Kinguin to buy their cheap games even cheaper.

>>
>>315388428
Not gonna bother with it. As bad as Steam is right now and how buying games was in the past, I never wanted to pirate video games. Of course there is a limit to my patience and that didn't apply to single games I wanted to play that were locked behind a 200-400€ console/handheld. They could have made a good chunk of money on me but they never choose to bring those games over to PC. But now Square Enix is porting their games over and the ports are in a horrible state. Too late now buddy. If they think I buy a 400€ device just to play like 5 games on it I really want, they can fuck themselves.

So the "official" reviewers can't even post their reviews for 6 hours until AFTER it has launched and been bought by millions of uninformed customers.

And while they're perfectly and legally allowed to post their review as soon as the game launches, Bethesda is threatening retaliation with no future review copies ahead of time if they break this (illegal) embargo for 6 hours post-launch.

At this point you have to consider gaming "journalists" as nothing more than accomplices.

And this is the consumers fault, they should fucking wait and not pre-order/buy until reviews are out. Then the reviews will be forced to be dis-embargoed on release because they can't afford to miss the hype/launch window.

Surely this isn't the finished version of the game?

The guy walked for 11 minutes and saw like 10 enemies and a couple of coyotes. Usually Bethesda games have you tripping over enemies and deer and shit.
There were even any unique looking buildings or significant environment changes.

Unless this guy found the most boring, empty part of the game to run from edge to edge though, FO4 looks way out of character for a Bethesda RPG.

Not really. Hype is always stronger than reality.
Letting someone cook up a bunch of hyperbole in their head is the primary way games are sold now. Showing them the actual product, even if it is good, would probably do damage to the perception.
It's a 'day 1' 'pre-order' 'season pass' industry. It's designed to take your money before you ever touch the product, so it's not surprising they want tight control of what you see.

The only way they would want to show a game as much as possible is if they thought it was good AND no one was talking about it.

But isn't that how it was in the first place? I barely knew anything about new games back in the day and the only way to get information about them was in magazines which had mostly just text and a few pictures. Sometimes even a few videos of gameplay were allowed to be published.

You guys kinda forgot that the whole charm of a new game is to play it blind. There is always a risk that you are let down no matter what, you just take a quick glance at reviews to be sure that your not buying a bunch of dead rats in a pouch instead of the promised gold.

Buddy didn't see any places of note, I have to wonder if he was purposefully avoiding landmarks or settlements. Feel free to watch it for yourself; he is in a forest 95% of the time.

One thing that the player may have had no control over was the fact that he didn't see any thing other than his companion(?). Yes he did see 6 npcs of various varieties but don't Bethesda games usually have a lot more? I remember playing Oblivion and always running into deer and random raiders in the wilderness. Even Fallout 3 had a world ripe with creatures and characters.

They streamlined the leveling experience so you just do the story missions and you can solo all the content. As a single player RPG it's pretty fun. People should give it a second chance.

I'd also add that I'm not a sub. I'm preffered (bought something on the cash shop/own the original game).
