For people that are fans of the whole post apocalyptic scenario sneaking through the wasteland is what made these games so great. Randomly finding new things instead of going online and having everyone tell you how to beat the game in the right order, running out of ammo and food, getting jumped by the talos company mercs way out in the boonies because you weren't watching your back well. There's tons of this in those games. These are what Fallout is all about. This stuff happened in the originals too.
Obesity is the problem here. The sense of adventure comes only in the flavors prescribed by the marketing teams that sell these games.

Hard to say whether the map is small or not, there is no scale. They've said its Skyrim size, without the giant mountains and shit all over aka more playable space and more dense content.
FO3's game world is like 50 square miles but DC is broken up in a bunch of instanced shit so its hard to say how big it actually is. So this might not "feel" as big as FO3 just because of less instanced overworld stuff, like giant random rubble blocking parts of DC from each other.

Fallout 4 is clearly going the TF2 route in that it gives the game dimension through more than an intense number of polygons. I also don't think they're circumventing the physics engine by making things hollow, instead I believe they are going easy on the detail so that they can keep the animations full and weighty through the use of density in each of the character models.

Behtesda didn't execute this kind of style very well and I'll say it again, they should be ashamed of their animating team. Look at that chick with the hat who's mouth seems to be struck by a hairdryer. That newspapaer guy's mouth just spazzes up and down when he's talking and when he turns away from the door it's just anything but natural.
Even the fucking running animations were awful in the initial trailer. This is not because they're trying to "optimize" the game or "focus somewhere else". A multi million company that releases AAA titles every year sould be able to give us a fucking run cycle that doesn't look like shit. This is just unacceptable.

Animations are expensive and time consuming. If you do it manually and not mocap it also requires a lot of skill and practice.
Also they are lazy. So its a lose-lose for everybody.
