What armor type is generally used for Shulk? I get that most of the cast already likes using lightweight stuff and that Reyn's role as a tank practically implies he should be using heavy armor or something.
One thing that also bothers me is the sheer amount of arts that characters not called Shulk get, it feels like a ton of them will be redundant and waste AP. I also haven't bothered with Colony 6 restoration, I'm not sure what value it's to me other than not skip travelling for the gem furnace.

I can pretty much tell you are not gonna enjoy XCX. But anyways to answer your question:
Shulk you want light weight items. Agility up gems are your friend, make sure you put them on everyone. Pay attention to skills and skill linking. Buff up shulk's ether otherwise monado purge will be resisted and there are some damn nasty spikes late game. If shulk is AI, remove battle soul from the arts pallete, as ai always uses it and gets killed fast.

Shulk does well with medium or lightweight gear, depending on how you link his skills. Melia is indeed great, Sharla is the worst character once your other characters get some self-healing going with late-game skills.
Colony 6 restoration is worth it if you intend to do the aftergame stuff, but otherwise totally optional. You can get a quest from the guy next to the gem furnace in colony 9 that gives you a portable gem furnace.

You can't save from the moment you decide to do the final bosses, the game makes it very obvious when you'll reach the point of no-return. Beating the final boss allows you to start a NG+ on a new save file, and you can always go back to your old one and do post-game stuff like deal with theHigh Entia refugees, beat the Super Bosses, etc.
You get the portable gem furnace very early on in the Colony 6 restoration, I think it's after reaching the first rebuilding tier.

the character creation is rather shitty and is very limited. For example, the hairstyles are tied to faces (i.e. if you pick a shounen face you can only pick fuckboy hair, if you pick clint eastwood face you can only pick old man hair, etc) and you can't tweak facial features. Basically there's very little options for editing characters overall. Which is a big dissappointment since so many people tried to list the custom protagonist as an improvement over XC.
Its sad that RPGs from fucking 2005 have better character creation than a 2015 one
