Seemed like there were lots of author inserts and Original the Characters that existed just for the sake of having extra characters (what was the hacker kid's name? latchkey?), and it seemed to skip right by some parts while dragging others out way, way too long.

Oh yeah, I can see why that would get annoying. Personally I didn't mind the extra characters terribly much because I felt like their inclusionand deathswere some of the things that advanced Light's character development.Plus 99% of them die before it ends so they don't really affect the classic series much.They didn't feel particularly author-insert to me, I mean that hacker guy was literally a barely-functioning autist. I understand though, I'm not a fan of when stories add characters unless they absolutely have to because it feels kind of cheap.
