The breeding isn't that complicated, you just take good babies and keep making them fuck their parents for generations until you manage to get the IVs you want. More tedious than anything.

There's a difference between battle system and encounters. Pokemon has a pretty complex battle system (for a turn-based JRPG), but 99% of the trainers you fight have shit teams and the AI is crap.
Also the newer games have become even simpler.

Well, it doesn't help that breeding and iv's/ev's are the worst shit that's ever made its way into an RPG, especially since it literally involves nothing but endlessly grinding and hoping for good RNG, or riding back and forth on a bicycle to hatch eggs.
