IIRC the staff is objectively the best answer if you want to minmax because you cannot reach max mana without it.
In terms of actual practicality, IIRC the shield is the most useful off the bat.

Also on video options in pcsx2 set on renderskip=1 it removes garbage graphics and something that slows down certain elements, also avoid 8-bit textures since they cause slowdown instead of speeding shit up, this only works in KH1, KH2 uses a not too different config
shield is shit, all it does is give you guard ASAP but staff gives you guard only a little bit later and makes your magic way better, letting you steamroll the game

an extra even more hard bonus boss than the other pretty hard bonus bosses
there's a few more abilities

I can't remember which answers lead to which result, but if you get "dawn" it means you level up faster for the first 40 levels and slower after level 60. If you get "dusk" it means you level up slower for the first 40 levels and faster once you're above 60, and "midday" means you'll level up at a consistent rate throughout the game.

For most powerful Sora, grab Staff and drop Sword. Staff gives you more MP in which you can't get anywhere else. Shield gives you equipment and accessory slots along with defense. Not dropping or not picking shields gives you an equal medium of slots. Sword just boosts strength but you can easily synthesize strength boosters. Picking sword is pointless.

I played the original release, and the game isn't very hard. You didn't need to minmax, and by the time the hard fights come up you are fine on magic.
Now I'm sure you might need to minmax on critical or whatever that super hard mode introduced for 1.5, but for base game you should be fine doing what the fuck ever.

On PCSX2, go to the System tab. There should be an option to enable Widescreen Patches. Click on it, it should be enough.
This will stretch your HUD by the way, no way around it but not much of a bother.
