The flashback said "5 years earlier" and in the comic she get her ass whooped by Cassie at around the 15 year mark. I think it sort of implies that Frost joined the Lin Kuei soon after her defeat by Cassie in that underground MMA match. My theory is that the experience wounded her pride pretty deeply and she just attached herself to the Lin Kuei as a way to rebuild her confidence. She probably got a little too invested into it and channeled her shame/anger towards the Lin Kuei's enemies so when a member of their biggest rival clan happens to show up and they start making peace it sort of threatens her identity.

In Raiden's flashback she said she "worships no gods" which I think hints at the fact that she wasn't actually devoted to Shinnok and was just using him to further her own mysterious motives. Mark my words, she's going to be the new Quan Chi of MK.
