They won't be able to play some of the latest games and regardless of what version of the 3ds they have, they won't have the new 3d features, buttons, or analog nub either. The PS2 was hard to make games for as well.
The difference is that the PS2 had a major headstart, was affordable, had a rapidly growing install base and wasn't quite as difficult to code for.
The PS2's coding difficulty actually helped Sony a lot, because it meant the PS2 would be the lead platform thanks to install base and ports would be too expensive to make due to the extensive recoding. With the 7th gen, the 360 was the lead platform, so the PS3 was routinely shit on.

Vita is a niche console. Most of the great games you're talking about are seriously niche. I have nothing against japanese games, however I seriously dislike weeb games, which is 99% of Vita's library right now.

The only people going to buy the new system are people that play video games avidly. Which means they most likely have bought 1 or 2 iterations before hand. Meaning you are miling the same people that have showed loyalty and treating them poorly.
It's not a new generation of hardware like the gameboy advanced over the gameboy. It's a 3ds with a slightly stronger processor that gives you like 5ps in more intensive games oh and a useless nub.
Honestly the only thing I like and think is cool on mine is the glowing light. pulsates orange when a friend comes online and green when someone street-passes you. Thats it.
Meanwhile sony while having some not so interesting games, havent gimped their consumers. In fact they added more to what you could do with their product when the PS4 was released.
