Seriously though, can you picture how cool this tech could be?
>Vidya game
>Has a safe zone, inn or "base" of some kind
>Molds itself to the size you have to play with
>Between missions/levels or whatever you return to this "room" to do shit
Also you could fill it full of waifus.

>>285633146
The min size for this tech is "the size of two yoga mats", as told by Valve. The max if 15ftx15ft. Seriously I've got enough room in my bedroom, let alone my living room. Sucks for people living in cupboards though.

Honestly I don't know how this room VR will work besides how you mentioned. I think it would be really cool to have some base defense game where you need to do something like that , but the tech is really limited.

Virtuix omni is better in a sense of functionality but not feel. I wonder how VR will evolve from here.
>>
>>285635406
With walking space you could have a virtual room, one you could walk around in, rather than being limited to movement with the controllers. What else is there to understand?

Minecraft like builder (Though not shitty looking pixels) where you can 'paint' objects in your room. For an example, you could make a desk or bed into a registered space in the VR, allowing your alien waifu to walk around, sit on your computer chair, lay on the bed. Could paint the walls to look like the side of a spaceship, or an underwater room. The sense of scale you have in VR is amazing, large objects look really damn large.

Myst like puzzle game, room based. You're walking around a VR room solving puzzles and shit.

Educational things. Put this shit on a child and teleport that fuck directly onto a pirate ship where he can learn about pirates. Or whatever.

>>285636525
No you can't break reality anon. When you first use the system you set up where you can walk, where objects and walls are, then while playing if you come close to something a virtual wall/box etc shows up informing you that you're about to hit something. If you want to walk further than the space in the room, you need to do so with the controllers.

>>285636748
Its a good joke, but those kind of games would be amazing. Picture Legend of Grimrock in VR with this tech.

Its a trade off, really. You get a lot of your income sent to Valve, but you also make a lot more because of how many people use steam. Also of note, you can still sell elsewhere, you just ALSO need to sell it on steam.

Gaben said that Source 2's main focus is not on graphics, but on user-generated content and "creating value for the community", whatever that means.

A lot of great detail is often faked by the use of normal map. Sometimes you can have a very simple mesh that is wrapped in a detailed normal to give it the look of being complicated. This is saying that normal maps that have large details wont look good, but normal maps with finer detail (tile edges, grain-like texture) will look fine.
No idea about the surface shape thing though. Can anybody clarify?

No matter where you sell a game you need to pay a percentage to the seller. Be it on retail or a digital store. Every engine also requires that you pay another percentage to the engine maker (or a flat number). Source 2 completely removes the later which is awesome. Being stuck to steam isn't too bad seeing that Steam is practically the face of PC gaming by now.

>>285638841
Because the human eye cant see over 4 million pixels, just like it can't see over 24 fps.

Nah, for reals though, It's because the little mesh is supposed to be in the areas where your eyes normally don't see, as they don't really see in big squares. By doing this, you can decrease the pixel count thus increasing performance.

SteamVR is a platform, a set of libraries and tools for VR developers. It's Valve's competition to the Oculus SDK.

HTC Vive is a hardware solution built on SteamVR, with similar specs to the Oculus Rift.

Similar to how any manufacturer can build a Steam Machine, any manufacturer can build a SteamVR headset.

They require a minimum 3m by 4m room to work in. Easily done if you live in a house but in a condo or apartment that's not so common.

So now not only is the cost of VR the headset and gaming PC but also the morgtage for a new home.

Sony will launch first party developed VR titles, all small tier games with replayability.

I guarantee major devs/publishers won't get behind VR alot mainly because the extra work and optimization isn't going to be worth the investment for what little bit of sales boost it will be.

They can barely get games to run smoothly at launch on high end PCs, with VR ontop of that it will be impossible without alot more crunchtime work on polishing the game. Which won't happen.

So Valve will make some Valve VR stuff, probably alot of indie games here too. Sony does Morpheus tech demos they call games, and Oculus gets some indie scraps and kickstarter games.
>>
>>285655554
Because we have actual technology now and this isn't a piece of shit like that.
>>
>>285655554
Being years ahead of your time doesn't equal sucess. Now those fucking games that's another story.
>>
if anyone actually thinks sony's VR is a good idea, they're idiots.

It'll be expensive and the entire PS4 userbase will get mad as fuck that literally 1 percent of their games library will work with this new expensive toy.

What Sony should've done is just announced a 3rd pillar "PSV" console, double the power of PS4, more expensive and premium marketting around VR. People would still buy it despite it's higher price, because VR done well will just sell itself.

That, and people spend more money on ipads each year than something as groundbreaking as VR.

Simply making a hackney add on to their allready dated spec console is doing it well fucking wrong. VR needs hardware that's not even a year away yet to be "reasonable".

Tethering VR to a shitheap console that can barely push 1080p 60fps (the absolute dogshit minimum for VR) is a bad move and will just turn the mainstream away from VR by pissing in the pool.

Sony should just fucking stay out of it.
