I have a real fucking problem with modern games. I can't buy them because they are all download-only or require online activation, and I hate that shit. I think it invalidates the whole point of ownership (and if you think it's just buying a "license" that makes it worse, not better). I refuse to do it. I would like to support devs and play some shit, but other than CD Projekt, I don't even know companies that do real physical releases with no online strings attached anymore. If they exist, they're hidden among the mass of "requires Steamworks installed" and "requires online activation".
I'm getting by with piracy of course, but what the fuck do I do? I can't buy games because assholes no longer want to sell them properly.

As for download only, deal with it. You have never owned software in your life. You have only owned licenses for the use of it.
As for piracy, it's your choice. Lots of devs deserve your money, especially companies like CDP. I can't force you to buy them, but there are lots of devs that don't deserve your money. Especially the AAA industry, doubly so for box titles and consoles.
I argue that download only has given us more convenience. Now I have discarded all my ugly game boxes and filled my library shelves with books. I've started reading more because of it as well. My life is much less cluttered with my installed games on a hard drive and a list to download from Steam as I want them. To top it off, I don't look like a loser virgin manbaby. Like a gen-you-eyne high flyin, limousine ridin adult. Woo for that, and woo for digital downloads.
Also downloading and online distribution has strengthened consumer rights groups. The same applies with your physical copies. You only ever saw it happen with online titles. Counter Strike was mostly online and if your CD-key got banned from the master server, your box copy let you play the tutorial level and that was it.
Same went for Starcraft and other popular online multiplayer titles. You would only have access to the single player game until you got a new CD-Key if you got banned.

No, it's the same issue. You're worried about a dev taking away your ability to play a game. A CD-Key ban did the same thing. Devs only ever revoke a CD-Key for the purpose of a multiplayer ban, in our current sphere.
If a dev were to just take away a CD-Key from a lawfully purchasing customer (read: not from shitty third world key resellers) with no identifiable purchase, their assholes would be fucked so thoroughly that a whole new SVU gamer episode would be made.

Reselling is the only real difference. If more online distributors allowed for the reselling of licenses, that would be a thing. However, reselling was always seen as a bane of software developers of all kinds. So you will not see that return in an online format.
As for the servers dying, you have electronic receipts for every purchase in your email. If the servers go down, pirate it. Or contact the game dev and ask for an alternate way to install. If a service like Steam goes down, and if Gabe doesn't make good on his promises for contingency, any reasonable dev will provide you with alternate ways to get their game. No country would ever pursue charges of piracy for a legitimate customer. Heck, most countries let you use pirate services to create backups of software you own.
Open source software is also a whole different ballpark and you know that's moving the goalposts. We're talking about proprietary software, like what most of the industry uses.
