What do we consider "non mainstream"? All of those games are confirmed working, as far as I know. Hell, I would consider Romancing Saga to be more obscure than any of those, and it ran just fine. There are bugs, certainly, but even the PS3 emulation is buggy. Way of the Samurai ran better on PCSX2 than it did on the PS3, in fact.
I would agree a PS2 is your "safest" bet, but the PCSX2 emulation has come so far that it's not really necessary.

PS4 - Subjective to the library, best for digital users. Offers a large streaming service with PS+ that allows passive users to play a new game every month. You do not own these games.
PS3 - Good for the entirety of the PS3 library, and HD collections of classic PS2 games
Also recommended:
PS2 - Has a large library of cult favorites and tons of RPGs. a lot of games, less control on quality, but a lot of good hidden gems as well as well known titles. A hacked PS2 has access to all PS2 and PS1 games Japanese and Pal.
N64 - Only for the people who truly love it, N64 carts are hard to emulate due to many compatability issues. Games like mario and zelda run smooth, but more obscure games like glover and goemon have texture issues. Physical carts are the best way to play, but may cost a bit to maintain.
Dreamcast - Dreamcast is a love it/hate it console. If you love sega arcade, it's for you. Its also got some of the best ports of certain well known games.

Super Nintendo/NES/Master System/Genesis - Only for those who either still have their carts, or are diehard collectors. Games are fun, but the cart batteries have likely run dry and will soon due to age. Reccomended for emulation unless you're really passionate.
Sega Saturn: Only because of the price. Saturn games average at 150-300 per game due to rarity and scarcity. If you really want to pursue it, have the money for it.
Atari 2600/jaguar/coleco/intelivision: Only for collectors and those who grew up with them. Easily emulated. not worth going after in current day due to pricing.

When I sit by the PC I never play games, I just browse /v/ or jerk off or something. I look at my stream library and it mainly just feels like a hassle. I always try to multitask on PC and get easily side tracked because they are so fucking applicable. When I play on consoles I just sit down and concentrate on the playing, I chose a game among my smaller retail game collection and immerse myself and have a great time.
There is a beautiful simplicity with a console, and I actually think it's a shame they are becoming more and more like PC's, they are losing what made them special.

I love PC gaming. Or, at least, I love what PC gaming was. The fact is that we're not getting the kinds of PC exclusives that we did even three years ago. There isn't a new STALKER. Every MMO that isn't WoW dies basically straight away. Multiplats are generally glitchy, console-first, cheaply made ports that are missing features, or simply have horribly shit performance. PC dedicated developers primarily make strategy games or indies.
So, while I WANT to love PC gaming as I have for decades - it is changing. Denying this is denying reality. It just isn't as good as it once was. Check Steam Stats - everything that isn't DOTA/TF2/CSGO/Skyrim collapses in a few weeks. Even modding is basically dead outside of a few select titles. Yeah, I know - you can mod your Paradox games, but it isn't like it was in the late 1990's. People played the major mods in the millions. That does not happen anymore.

I want to argue with you, but you're right. The modding scene for HL1 and HL2 were amazing, and several other games had awesome modding communities. That changed in the mid to late 2000's for a lot of reasons, and the main one is that publishers wanted more control of their games. It's hard to sell DLC that consists of only a map pack and a few weapons if users are releasing this kind of content in the thousands for free.
This is actually why I still love Bethesda games even with all their problems. It's like they're desperately trying to keep that part of the game community alive.

The point wasnt returning it was getting money back. Ive actually exchanged a game that ive already opened at Gamestop (EB). Before. They gave me the "Just this one time blah " speel. But I did it. jusst took alot of talking and stuff but I got it done
