Is it just me who thinks that, the overall build quality of the New 3DS and New 3DS XL is terrible?
I have bought 3 New 3DS XLs and 2 New 3DS'. All 5 of them have had some sort of defect.

N3DSXL #1 – Warped backplate, unable to sit flat on a table.
N3DSXL #2 – All the shoulder buttons all made a different sound when pressed: one of them had a loud clicky feel/sound to it. Two had a mushy feeling to it, with no "click" sound when pressed and the last one has a combination of both mush and click feeling/sound.
N3DSXL #3 – The lock on the volume slider did not work at all, while the lock on the 3D slider did.
N3DS #1 – Two of the shoulder buttons are harder to press compared to the other two.
N3DS #2 – Three of the shoulder buttons had a "mushy" feel to it when clicked, One of the shoulder buttons made a loud click when pressed.

The Vita (both versions) are far superior to the 3DS in build quality, it's a shame.

The QC issues are not unique to the new 3DS models.
My first 3DS XL hat a dead pixel, super wobbly screen hinge and the left speaker was noticeably louder than the right one.
My replacement XL's screen wasn't inserted perfectly flat and the speaker issue persisted, but I learned to live with it.
Sold it and imported the new XL from Australia in November 2014. This one has that wobble again (though apparently it's done on purpose so that the hinge doesn't snap, great) but fortunately don't have any of the issues you described.
Two of my three friends' Majoras Mask new XL have dead pixels though.
Face it, the hardware part of any 3DS is a scam, not only because of the specs but also because of the ridiculously bad QC.
The platform does have a few great games going for it though, so you have to come to terms with yourself that you got scammed in order to enjoy the exclusives.

Nintendo's been bleeding money for 3 years in a row, they're understandably looking for every possible opportunity to cut corners and somehow show a profit. They're counting on most of them being gifts for children who generally won't notice how shitty something is as long as it works
I still love (most) Nintendo games, but each year that passes I have a continually bad taste in my mouth. I really am starting to hate supporting this company
I went through 4 3ds's, two of which I still have, and none had problems.
I only got rid of the first two I had because they were regular 3ds's with fucking gloss on it.
My Majora's Mask 3ds has a piss screen effect though.

It's true OP, there is definitely a lot of inconsistencies in quality with the N3DS. Myself I have a hinge that makes no click, while I know that the hinge clicking is standard.
