Are there any RPGs where the healing characters are the coolest? It seems like in general they're always portrayed as very passive characters who are only important to the plot if they're some kind of female love interest.

Not really. Even though White Mage is based on the D&D Cleric, which is suppose to be more of a warhammer welding Norse priest, the Princess of Moonbroke from DQ2 and FF1's White Mage kind of sealed in all RPG healers as being weak as piss and soft spoken females.

It's not that they're not cool to play though, I've found healers to be tons of fun in games where they're given enough abilities and are needed enough to have some depth to them. Healing is probably my favorite thing to do in MMOs even.
I just would like to see some games where they take the "Grizzled and gruff doctor who's tired of seeing so many good men die in the war" type of archetype and apply that to fantasy rather than just modern war settings. I want to play a JRPG where the battle scarred veteran of the party is the white mage who keeps all those damn kids alive.

No, Clerics have always been hammer-wielding war priests that turn undead and heal the party.
Paladins are specialized knights (which are specialized fighters) who stat-boost themselves with holy energy who can't really heal others.
In FF1 terms, Paladins are Knights who know Temper, NulDark, and absorb Light damage., while Clerics are White Wizard with Warriors Atk stat.
I don't think there are any interesting healer characters, I'm excludes ones with other benefits, like melee, range, magic, tanking, etc.

The doctor in Suikoden V was quite cool - sort of sallow dude who starts as a pessimistic NPC. Not an eligible party member though.
Why not make the mage a typical wizard? Not as powerful physically as the heroes, but wiser and with more battle experience.
Oh yeah, that's right, a love interest NEEDS to be shoehorned somewhere, so it might aswell be the mage because lol women.
Even though Priestesses were slutty shitlords, RO Priests were pretty baller. They could buff/debuff pretty hard and absolutely murder the undead.

In 5e, Paladins are confined to alignment, but are are confined to 3 different "Oath" subclasses: Oath of Devotion, Oath of Ancients, Oath of Vengeance. Devotion is Traditional Pally, Ancients are Green Knights (aka The Hero of the Gods of Nature), and Vengeance is fucking Batman (with notes that say you'll probably end up falling is you start as a Lawful or Good alignment.)
Only when you break the specific rules of your Oath do you actually become a Fallen Paladin (now called Oathbreaker Paladin) or a fucking Death Knight if you die without redemption.

When I learn about Clerics because they got permanently mark as weaklings on video games I start to wonder why no one changed the rules yet?
Realistically if you are a person simply task to stay alive and keep others also alive and only need to cast heal as necessary then why not wear the strongest physical/magical armor possible and be a walking tank? The armor could have a negative effect to movement speed (not a big deal when you should be healing after everyone get hurt if turn based and you should be in the back if real time based) and the ability to deal damage.
I wish they bring back the war hammer priests but honestly I just want to see a tanky priest who isn't a fighter but is more then prepare to get into combat.

yeah, the leveling system was completely broken. even dawn of souls couldn't fix it, but i enjoyed the early take on a character-driven JRPG, as there weren't very many at that point in time. maybe like phantasy star. FF2 had party members perma-dying left and right. it was some real shit, no other game at that point had anything like that.

Hexen Cleric is mainly offensive with some very minor healing capabilities. He can leech life with the Serpent Staff and in multiplayer, heal everyone within radius with a Mystic Ambit Incant.
And Hex2's Crusader is basically the cleric but somewhat more defensive, and his healing abilities are more passive and random. I sure was pissed when I found out that cleric in every other game always means "staff bitch that can't do anything but heal".
