Not a series specifically, but shmups as a genre have improved by going outside their niche audience and appealing to more people. Well, not the anime girls, but a wide audience in general. People might bitch about the genre becoming "more casual", but there have been a much larger variety of shmup games once they stopped trying to be hardcore bullet hell spam.
Not that hardcore bullet hell spam is a bad thing, I actually like it. But I also like other people enjoying the games, and actually seeing more than one game every two years come out.

I say this as a lifelong PCfag who has been playing GTA since the shareware version in 97.
1 was great, 2 was awful; but their decision to go for consoles really did wonders for the series. GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas never would have happened had GTA remained on PC and kept to its niche base.
Not only are the games better with each iteration, but they never abandoned the initial fanbase which they had begun with. We get late releases now, but I've always found them to be worth the weight, every time.
