Japan still makes games. The west makes "experiences".
The thinking is that, unless you're talking about a competitive CoD type of game, most consumers aren't going to play a game long enough or with enough skill to discern good, well-designed gameplay vs. flashy, style over substance 'press X to awesome" coddling, and will actually prefer games that make them feel good right away instead of pushing them to learn or get better. Even a lot of "serious" players prefer this, if you go by the endless NeoGAF posts complimenting games that "respect the player's time" (which in their minds is to make things smooth and easygoing).
Stuff like Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, Naughty Dog games etc. are experiences. There's minimal challenge and no real, meaty gameplay systems to dig into and master, but they look good, and they make you feel awesome without much effort. That's what people like, production values and power fantasies.

I always believed the Nintendo fans loved E3 2014 thanks to the comfy as fuck Treehouse stream. E3 2015 has the potential to totally blow for Nintendo, especially if their game lineup is weak.
The western lineup is fairly predictable and safe these days - new Madden, new FIFA, new Call of Duty, new Assassin's Creed, with delayed Battlefield, Need for Speed and Tom Clancy games.

I never actually understood why Bethesda RPGs get so much media hype when they look like total garbage and don't play very well. It's one of those anomalies in video games that I'm sort of glad exists because I enjoy those games, but I can't believe people play them without mods.

Because Japanese companies aren't making "the same game". If you believe that silly meme, you're on your own. Mario games are never "the same", and even differ noticeably in the rather samey NSMB series. And games that do get too samey (Pokemon sometimes) get shit for it.
West sucks save for a few devs like Rockstar and Obsidian. Slavs are great devs, and so are Japs. Japan puts out the best games. Always have, always will.
