So I've just downloaded FFXIV because it's free. It's the first MMORPG I've touched in 15 years and I have to say I'm strangely weirded out. For the first hour or so I'm doing nothing but fetchquests in what seems to be an AOL chatroom hub with slightly better graphics.
I imagined the game would be about exploring untamed wilds and having a personalized adventure in a giant living and breathing world.
But so far it's a prettier version of ragnarok online.
Will this change up or is the genre just not for me?

FFXIV is a game that only people who haven't played wow think is good. The combat system/mechanics are straight up copied from wow, with an extra large dose of clunkiness. Quests are horrible, linear, and repetitive. World is lifeless. Honestly anyone who likes the game needs to just go play wow because xiv is just an inferior ripoff.

Maybe I worded that oddly. I loved the atmosphere in FFT and Vagrant Story and I imagined this game to have some of that atmosphere mixed with a giant, living world to explore. Sort of like BEING in FFT or something.

What's sorta disappointing to me is how handholdy the whole game is. You get quests (mostly meaningless) and then they're marked on your map and then you run to that exclamation mark. You get the feeling that everything you can and can't do is spelled out for you.
I really imagined a world of secrets and adventure.
Like just exploring a huge world, finding an ancient temple, without any markers or quest objectives and then looking inside. But everything in this game has a designated HUD marker, so it feels like things are just waiting for you to come over, interact and then reset.
I think some dude in this thread mentioned "theme park" and that's exactly the kind of feeling I'm getting.
I'm being shoved on a cart through an amazing scenery that I can only interact with in very limited ways.

Remember that it's still barely out of its infancy while WoW is on its deathbed. It still has a lot of room to grow. Also, the PS3 version limits how much the other two can do. The game originally had much bigger areas, albeit more bland, and better graphics, but they were toned down so that the PS3 could handle the game. Fortunately, support for that version is being dropped some time after the second expansion, so we could see it become an even better game farther down the road.

Content isn't challenging, graphically the game looks like shit, the netcode is awful and latency is bad if you are in EU, gameplay is slow paced, UI customization is barely a thing, you are forcefully mixed with consolebabbies, theorycrafting is a joke, PvP is barely existent/relevant...
The only redeeming quality of this title aren't gameplay related at all. Art/music are great, the universe holds itself, some characters are memorable, that's it.

Also if you do dungeons at the end of the game to level from 40-50 it's pretty much 1 dungeon run is 1 level. So about 30-40 minutes a level.
Healer and tank have it easier for this though since instant pop, but DPS can sometimes sit for a long time. I suggest finding a FC of people leveling other classes. will make your life way easier.

My FC had completed all content available at the time. But I mean it's a lot easier to just say someone's bad and dismiss anything they have to say.
DPS is braindead rotations with very very little to no modifying it based on procs or variables; it's just one circle feeding into itself, Tanking is double braindead and Healing is... alright. The longer GCD leads to a lower skill cap as there are less opportunities to think fast and use a different attack/spell to suit the situation(probably why the DPS rotations are giant circles anyway, any variance or need of a separate situational attack would throw it all off).
All the quests are fetch quests or go kill some bandits and the bandit leader and it's very boring leveling, even if the boring fetching is masked by a cutscene here or there. Grind grand company rep. Grind dailies. Grind your relic. Grind dungeons over and over.
It's just another MMO, but it looks pretty and has cutscenes so whatever.
Now I look like harry potter.
Giving this game 30 more minutes and if I don't encounter anything motivating I'll delete it.

Realize that pretty much all the random low-level starting quests are useless and slow.
Don't think of it like other MMOs where you have to complete every quest in sight to level up. Stay up with the main story quest and class quests, and do your hunting log and dungeons and FATEs, you'll keep up in levels just fine.

Even WoW doesn't have XIV's amount of fetch quests. Hell, I've gotten in cannons, played a Plants vs Zombies esqe quest, became a quest giver, and wrestled birds out of the sky. XIV's quests are literally pre-WOTLK. As for rotations, yeah WOD WoW is mostly priority based but when XIV 2.0 was released, WoW was in 5.4, which was a much different story. Rotations could be modified on the fly with situational skills for most situations and there was snapshotting, which had such a large skill ceiling that the difference between an alright Feral Druid or Affliction Warlock, for example, and an amazing one, was sometimes over 200k DPS. The lower GCD allows for much more fluid play and in-the-moment optimization, rewarding quick reaction times and decision making.

I really like the basic concept of final fantasy XIV (a huge final fantasy classic style world you can explore) but so far the game feels like a playing ground with all those player characters standing in front of squirrels and ladybugs and hitting them with glowy magic effects. I know I'm low level but I feel the game doesn't give you an exciting start.

You won't have fun for the first few levels, depending on how fast you're going, you might feel like dropping it. As OP described, all you do is fetch quests at the start. However, eventually you'll start to actually do stuff that's remotely fun, just don't give up too early on.

FF11 was apart of that era of MMOs before wow where usually to advance ahead/level up, it was REQUIRED to group with other people and do "camps" and grind off mobs/trash.

The problem with FFXIV is that Square doesn't know how to handle content that isn't "current."
Low levels are an absolute joke, and it's no wonder people quit long before they hit 50. They were so rushed when 2.0 was created that they just copypasted generic shit from WoW without remembering to add the fun parts.
It gets better as you make it further through 50 content, but first and second coil were nerfed into the ground (which is a damn shame considering they were incredibly fun and difficult, I adored turn 7 in particular), so people will say "I've tried raiding and it was a joke" and it absolutely is until you get to, once again, what's current. Bahamut has the tightest enrage I've seen in an MMO while being 14 minutes long and if one person makes a tiny mistake or a small step in the wrong direction it's a wipe.
The end result is a game that's entirely tailored for someone level 50 going from patch to patch. If you're new, all the content that was once enjoyable is now just a drag to get through. All the dungeons and primals that were made for i50 you'll be attempting alongside i130s, while buying welfare i120 gear.
Maybe things will be reworked in Heavensward, but who knows.

The world was huge and dangerous, unlike WoW clones that send you to quest everywhere FFXI was a game where you only saw bits and pieces as you leveled and went through it but there was a massive amount of territory left for you to explore. The sense of adventure was amazing as you had to carefully pick your way through zones or could come across a secret area that was so far off the beaten trail that only a few people knew it existed.
Traveling around took a large amount of time and it gave the world a much better sense of scale, no matter where you were there was going to be hidden areas or dark untraveled corridors nearby to explore, every zone had a sub zone that probably had a sub zone of it's own.

It had no instances except for boss rooms. Dungeons were xbox hueg, required you to buy or find a map and when you met someone else inside it was an adventure in itelsef (there were so many hige dungeons seeing someone was an event, you stopped and say hi).
Mobs never stopped chasing you, unlike wow where you just run into everything and just wait for them to drop aggro. You would often see trains of mobs following some faggot running to zone.
Mobs of your level took about 2-5 minutes to kill in a party, alone you'd just get rekt. So you often abused the invis/sneak spells uin dungeons to run through mobs. But those spells could break at any moment, meaning you'd shit your pants when seeing the message "invis is wearing off" when in the middle of an army of goblins.
Also if you died you'd lose XP, level down and go back to your save point, basically ruining hours of grinding and exploring.

The same reason why every other MMO released after 2004 was a mess, they wanted the WoW crowd.
FFXI was their most profitable FF title of all time, holding a solid 500k subscriber base for over a decade. If they had made a game like it then they once again would have had a solid game that would have made them lots of money and held a loyal fanbase for another 10+ years. The problem here is that greed set in, why make lots of money when you could potentially make LOTS of money?
I guess you could say they kinda succeeded, ARR has an ok amount of players but it comes at the cost of the game being utterly bland and devoid of what made old MMOs so amazing to play. Will it live for 14+ years? Doubtful.

And the repeating terrain had nothing to do with it, it was just copy pasted everywhere because lazy.
