It's a mixed bag. Most games right now are innovationless rehashes that have realism and graphics as the main point. When you pine for realism, you just don't do things that aren't happening in reality. And so you end up with 'not-really-cliches' like male-filled armies, because in reality that's what is happening. Blame industry, but lack of other representations isn't indicative of any sort of -isms other than realism. Blame western industry that thrives on rereleasing same FPSes. Also, Portal was popular anyway, not only for females, because of innovative gameplaythey took from Narbacular Drop.

Portal isn't a shooter though, so the FPS arguement doesn't really hold. Splatoon seems a much better example to test this idea against. I don't get it. So what this video is saying is that the aesthetics of the game is more gender specific than the genre? That's not really a secret. Yes shooters are primarily military themed and thus male oriented because the idea of shooting is for the most part thought of in a military way. That's not wrong either, guns are made for killing. Portal and Splatoon may twist the idea of that, but no one expects them to become the dominant style of doing that type of game, they're just fun ideas to mix it up. I just don't really get the message here and what he wants done about it. There will always be games that switch up how a game plays, but it's nothing at all malicious that shooters usually are themed for males.
