Combat will get repetitive after a while, you've got magic, abilities and such, but you'll soon realize they're pretty useless and just spam X instead, becoming some strange Metal Gear Rising clone with a less effective parry/dodge mechanic.

People pretty much only play for the combat anyways. Most people can't even understand the story and it gets pretty fucking ridiculous in the later games.
But the combat is very solid and definitely worth playing just for that.

A level 1 run means you get no XP and don't get the abilities Once More and Second Chance (abilities that keep you alive at 1 HP and such), so you get one shot by lots of attacks. Unless you want to brute force your way into being able to beat every boss perfectly without getting hit its not advisable on a first playthough. If you're confident just play Critical, but don't use EXP Zero to keep yourself at level 1. Or do and see if its too difficult.

Its a game where you have to quickly dodge and block enemy attacks, figure out enemy attack patterns, and then learn how to best hit the enemies without getting hit back all while having crazy as fuck fast paced combat.

Should I buy 1.5 HD first? I've only briefly played a KH game and I remember it being pretty fun.

I played 1,2 and BBS on the PS2 and PSP but it was ages ago, and they weren't the final mix editions.
