Potential for expansion. The world is so rich in characters, environments, unexplored avenues and mechanics that it makes the derivative material of it equal or better than the original.
Basically, it allows fanfiction of it to have a high chance to be good even if the writer isn't that great.
For example, while His Dark Materials is the better series, there's pretty much not a single good fanfiction of it, because the story is self-contained with no leftover plot hooks. Everything in the story is there because it needed to be for the plot to be good. Rowling was great at adding pointless bullshit for variety and atmosphere.

At least it wouldn't have played like shovelware. I remember in Half-Blood Prince there was a lot of things that didn't matter, you got no incentive to go around collecting everything, and exploration was cut down a lot.
Plus the cutscenes and voice acting were really bad. I remember in the ending you just get a bad shot of Snape killing Dumbledore, it zooms in on Harry yelling SNAPE, then cuts to him with Ron and Hermione standing outside saying they're leaving. Then credits.

Gambon was a terrible Dumbledore for the entirety of his film time. Harris was perfect for the role but was frail because of his health/age. Dumbledore in every situation was always calm, polite and in control. Gambon had no clue how to play the character because he hadn't read the books before taking the role and thus fucked it up royally. McKellan should've played Dumbledore after Harris passed
