I've been really interested in checking this series out. Some friends have told me that it has some elements in common with Shenmue, which sounds like enough to sell me just by itself.
From what I gather, most of the series is in Japanese, but the first game is dub-only? And supposedly a pretty bad dub, at that. Is it difficult to get through?

First game is dub only, yes, and it's a pretty bad dub. But thankfully it's also the shortest in the series, and has the least amount of voice acting anyway, so it makes it bearable. Mark Hamill is decent as Majima though, and Kazuma's voice isn't too bad. Everyone else is shit though. And yes it's very much like Shenmue.

The only thing they lost is character progression feel. In Yakuza 3 you really felt like building Kiryu's skills through entire game. You find ancient scrolls, learning moves from teachers or your old sensei and shit like that. In Y4 it's more like "level up - unlock move" which is a little disspointing.

Not difficult to get at all. Here's some copypasta.
It's completely up to you. All the games have menu options to recap each game, and while they're quite in-depth, we both know there's nothing like playing the actual games. It's highly recommended you play them in chronological order to truly fall in love with Yakuza.
The combat in the first game can put a lot of people off due to how clunky it is. If you're willing to give it a go, don't do full 4-hit combos too much when surrounded, just do 2-3 hits then back off. Makes combat a lot easier when you're not just punching thin air, then getting punched in the back of the head. I say this because I've heard these complaints, and seen a few people on Youtube do it, and complain. Also grabbing can be a bit of a pain as you can easily miss your mark and be left open to attack.
A lot of people agree the second in the best of the franchise, and the combat is less clunky with lock-on improved. BUT of course if you're willing to start with the PS2 games, go with the first obviously. I find the first two games emulate well even on toasters. Also, the move from PS2 to next gen is quite breathtaking as the city comes to life so to speak.
In the end it doesn't really matter all that much as the recaps in 3 and 4 are really well done. People have started with the PS3 games and fallen in love, just to go back to playing the PS2 entries (dissapointed that they didn't start with them). Just have fun and thanks for supporting the series.
