The only character who starts strong is Geralt because he can take care of bronze/silver monsters easy, but as it goes into mid/late game, everyone can deal with them.
Seriously, all the problems your character runs into is solved by spending a good amount of character development, and this is even more true for Geralt because he always has to deal resolve issues.

The dwarf has a lot of shields which lets him pretty much take on any monster who fights him. He also starts with two free slots to put wounds in, which is fucking insane. Especially for someone who can go in the Diplomacy route.
They're all good characters in their own way.

All I've played is TW2 and I'm currently playing through TW1 in preparation for 3, but from what I can tell Yennefer and Ciri are completely book only characters.

It's based almost entirely on narrative memory (personal history and shit that happened) not procedural memory (how to use tie your shoes or spell). That shit can happen in real life that way.

It's mostly plot-convinient to accomodate people who had not read the books, and give the player greater extend of freedom to form him as a character. It's... rather selective for that.
In general, Geralt does not seem to remember people he met in the past several decades, and events that happened to him in the past ten years or so. He does remeber the Wild Hunt, probably that thing is imprinted in his mind a bit stronger than other memories. Particulary becausethe Wild Hunt Guy was the guy who caused the amnesia.

It's unlikely that it was cobbed together from an old footage. The famitsu screens we had were from a PS4 version of the game (actually the only console-taken footage we have seen of the game) and they did not look "miles better" than the E3.
Last concise footage we got was the 35 min gameplay footage, not the SoD trailer, which is about a year old now, if not more. And the 35 min gameplay footage did not look QUITE as impressive than the SoD trailer, but that should not suprise anyone. Partiaully because it was admitedly played on a medium-ish settings, partially because the SoD trailer footage is a poor reference point: if you really expected the game to have the same exact degree of fidelity after going through optimalization at every point of the game, you really have only yourself to blame for disapointments.

I think it depends on the interest of modders. They released modding tools for TW2 quite late so it didn't get a lot of things going but maybe if they release them with the game and with the hype it currently has it could just happen. But considering how late they released them I'm guessing they were just testing the waters for TW3. Sure both 1 and 2 were moddable, technically but due to the nature of the games I doubt they would have been heavily modded, even if they had better tools on release day.
I think having an open world is one of the key elements to attract modders. At least it seems that way.
And apparently having a shit engine so that people feel the need to fix your shit for you also helps. Hopefully TW3 doesn't have that.

If you look at that video, and extrapolate over the entire world map that you can get in the gameplay video, it would take about 18 minutes to reach the bottom of the map from the top,
at the speed he's going at in this video, not full gallop.
At full gallop it would take much less time.
Look at how fast he's moving through that city at that slow horse walking speed.
It's clear the stated measurements by the devs are fabricated.
