I know, I know. Everyone hates it. I didn't really give a shit about it until it went on sale, and Steam recommended it. It's not a "game" so much as interactive fiction, but I'm fine with that. I thought it was sweet, I thought it was poignant; and the ending made the start more sensible.
I thought it was very sweet, reminiscent of an age I lived in, and it filled me with a weird blend of nostalgia for being a kid again. It told a good story and it made me a bit weepy.

But no, after they escape, it makes it even more poignant, at least for me.
I kept dying, over and over, trying to save Kyousuke and always fucking up.
And when I actually did save him, it felt as if I had saved the entire goddamn fucking universe.
Him showing up was such a great emotional scene and the credits rolling, everyone happy made it all the more better.

It took me the better part of half a year to play through P3 and P4, which was partly due to time constraints and partly due to needing to take breaks from the duller moments of the games.
But despite all that, I was still immersed in the games as they began to draw close to their conclusions, the subtle way they make you feel like a part of the world (like the background NPCs having stories that you have no influence over) leads to a satisfying pay-off. That's why I felt a mixture of happiness and sadness during the ending scene. Everyone involved in SEES has a level of bitterness and reluctancy about them and the ending brings closure to that as they're enabled to carry on with their normal lives again.
