Among some other things, in the PC version there's the loss of shader_transparent_generic. This made the jackal shield and c_field_Generators look worse. A few things lost their multipurpose maps, like the reflection masks and detail masks, like the assault rifle, the flag, and a couple other things to boot.
Don't tell me gaming PC's weren't hella expensive back in 2000 man. They were. My friend's dad was the only person I knew who could get a real gaming PC because he was a doctor. It was a 1500 rig and when Rome Total War came out he had to upgrade it so he could max it out again. He now has a $2000 modern rig that will run anything he wants, except all he plays is World of Tanks so whatever. This is all custom built mind you.
He still has the old 1500 rig, and it's just an antiquated piece of crap by modern standards. I'm not even sure if the parts still work, I should take a picture of it sometime.

The Xbox wasn't cutting edge hardware by any means. It was just a Pentium 3 with a GeForce 3. The first prototypes of it were made literally using the guts of a Dell laptop. About price, yes, PC hardware was probably more expensive like always but the prices were already very mainstream by 2002. PC "gaming" software wasn't necessarily more expensive (and got discounted earlier). If there is a reason Halo looked better on the Xbox is because Microsoft wanted it that way.
The GC was cutting edge, not in the sense of being more powerful than the Xbox (it wasn't, but it was very close and in some scenarios it was better), but in the sense that it was as powerful as it could be at a very low cost. Nintendo didn't sell it at a high loss and it was cheaper than the Xbox which was sold at a huge loss. Part of that high price was justified with features like the hard drive or the DVD. But looking at it from an engeenering perspective the GC was a very focused design while the Xbox was just a PC.
Also, as time passed, Nintendo, with an already not very high cost design could slash the prices. Microsoft still sold at loss because they were using off the shelf parts by Intel and Nvidia, who decided to jew on Microsoft and not lower the price of those specific chips even when they were old already.
The Xbox was as cutting edge as a PC was, and offered features never seen before in consoles, but that's because Microsoft decided to pay for it, not because it was a wonderful machine from the future.

As I recall the GC did not ship at a loss. After the price drop to 99 bucks I assume they took a bit of a loss per unit.
And yes, the Xbox wasn't a supercharged PC at any rate, but it was effectively a subsidized console. It offered far better performance at 300 than anything you could have built yourself. And it stayed that way for quite some time. It's a world apart from the modern day consoles. Even the 360 wasn't totally outclassed by PCs, it could still try for a little while there.
The Bone and PS4 are just so laughably out of date hardware wise it's incredible though.

The Geforce 3 was actually only one year old and that's not bad. Anyway I highly doubt the variant in the Xbox was as powerful as the Geforce 3 Ti, and I suppose it was a bit weaker than the vanilla one, but still it's pretty good. The Processor was old. At that time Intel was selling the Pentium 4, aiming for 1GHz. The Xbox used a Pentium 3 because the Pentium 4s consumed a shitload of electricity and got hot as fuck so there was no way they could put one in a console. Still, since the machine is only for gaming it is quite allright. I am trying to find prices for PC hardware in 2002 but it's not easy but at that time I remember everyone was getting PCs for their house (everyone I mean average tech illiterate joe who saw good deals were coming and he was gonna save money spent on the internet cafe in the long run). Basically, Microsoft took a huge loss to bring a slimmed down PC with some PC features into console gaming.
The Gamecube was designed in a completely different way and that let Nintendo have almost the same performance at a fraction of the cost (and electrical power) while selling the console at profit.
That's why I don't consider the Xbox to be cutting edge at the time. For being a PC it wasn't cutting edge and for being a console it kind of lost the point, but Microsoft could afford it.

PC's for work were becoming more popular than ever, yeah. My family upgraded to a 700 dollar PC that could now run Civlization III since it had a DVD drive (WOAH) and our old computer didn't. Our old computer was from the early 90s.
And we still have that computer. It may lag when you click on a link to change web pages, but it still runs. I'm just glad I have my own computer because there's no way in hell I could have run Shogun 2 on that old thing. I don't even know if it would run Rome 1 very well. Never tried it.

Enough with this complaining about games not running your 2 year old toasters.
Games today aren't like they were 10-15 years ago, and require tremendous amount of hard work and programming skill. I myself am web developer and can speak from personal experience - coding is HARD. The very fact they can manage to produce such photo realistic results in a video game is breathtaking and should be respected even by people who haven't seen how HTML looks like.
If you can't run it, then just wait for patches as the developers optimize their game, and upgrade your machine when superior hardware is released.
