as much as I'd like to say Tetris, I think that someone's first vidya ought to be a game where you actually control a character, because that's just so much more representative of video games as a whole. Particularly, one where you can see your whole character, because first person seems confusing to people new to it, and they get so frustrated they can't enjoy it.
Also, it needs to be single player. If it's their first ever, they would get wrecked by anyone else, and wouldn't have fun.
So, something like a platformer seems ideal. Not original mario bros, because that's honestly too hard and the graphics are too primitive for this purpose.
I think Rayman Origins would actually be good.

she wants a 3DS so I'll probably lend her my Ocarina of Time. I think that's a good representation of what a game can be for a beginner
