Brawl - Pikachu and DK (sometimes zelda)
Smash 4 - Pikachu got nerfed to shit, so i'll probably main some other fast character with good aerial game.
I go by how manly they look. Unfortunately, I hear Ike isn't that great.
I've never chosen a main before, I mostly just played whoever I could beat up on my cousins/nephews/friends with at the time, which was a few different characters. I always liked Marth though, and I'm going to try out the new fire emblem characters before I make a decision. I think I'm actually going to try and be good at smash 4.
I picked my character because l like that character.

I main Kirby with the occasional Pit thrown in.
I chose Kirby as I didn't have the ability to take on my better friends when I first started playing Smash. His survivability, ability to harass and his ability to get out of the line of fire, and survive heavy shots allowed me to weather the storm as games became decided mostly by a handful of good players. Eventually, I just got good at using Kirby.
I still harass a lot, but I can use Kirby well enough to punish people for getting too close.

Mains have always been Link and Sheik. Like the characters, particularly Sheik. Love the LoZ games. So that's why I main them.
Sheik looks amazing in Smash 4 so that's a plus.

I try to play everything until I find one with a playstyle that works for me and that the character "feels" right (Ike felt fucking powerful in brawl for example).
My main is Zelda and she will still be it in Smash 4, started playing her when I looked over some stats in brawl and noticed how she was the least played character on our save. Picked up, loved her mobility, looks and general moveset. Her fireball is amazing when playing against scrubs and really good to great smash balls too, and her final smash is so easy to hit because of the straightline and it comes out so fast

I'm sorta happy. Ike being back was all I really wanted(awakening's characters are garbage), and Robin looks cool and reps magic users. Lucina's a fucking waste though, might as well have just brought Roy back if Sakurai wanted a Marth clone that badly. Awakening doesn't need half the series reps, but sakurai clearly likes it more than the rest of the series. No new items or music remixes yet, but I imagine Wii U version will have some songs.
i'll be fucking pissed if FE4 doesn't get any music in, though.

Playstyle. For example, I have no real Fire Emblem experience but I mained Ike in Brawl because I loved how he felt to play. And while I enjoyed Punch Out, I wasn't a devoted fan or anything wishing Little Mac was in before the Direct happened. When I was a kid I always chose Link because kid anon had a huge boner for him. He was also pretty damn solid, so that helped. In Melee he just happened to also be pretty great, so I stayed as him. In Brawl he was so shit that I was forced to move to Ike and Meta Knight, until I realized that Toon Link was just as good as Melee Link.
Seeing Link in Smash 4 has given me new hope to main him again.

kill options are decent, up-b is extremely fast, can't be DI'd out of, a great option out of shield and you can combo into it from throws on medium / heavier characters

There aren't a lot of fox mains who actually end up staying with fox. He's incredibly difficult to play and only a few notable foxes even make dents in bracket. You see a lot of shieks and marths in upper mid level play because of how easy they are to use. Foxes come and go, usually being switched out for Falco or another top tier. In melee anyway.

Awakening's issues were boring characters and really fucking shitty maps, as well as removing some mechanics that shouldn't have been removed and adding its own broken mechanic or two. Story was kinda dumb and not even close to engaging.
On the other hand most FEs have very few worthwhile characters and a boring story, so as long as they work in the mechanics they shouldn't have removed in future entries and balance pair up (if they must have it), I won't mind.

Megaman's entire game is too punish rolls and keep enemies at bay with lemons.
With metalblade PICKED UP megaman can use his momentum to throw it downwards and slide toward the enemy using Melee fox speed.
This has such little lag and is so good you dont even fucking know. Sakurai had to make it so metalblade disappears randomly to give the rest of the cast a chance but this leaves every character up to a short hopped lemon combo, grab or a smash attack. If metalblade is still present you have so many combos at your disposable.
The only reason why megamans normals are so bad is because he Advanced Tech is so outrageously good.

Started with Smash 64, tried Pikachu, Link, Fox and Samus. I believe I had Samus as my main but one day a friend came over and started saying how he tried Yoshi and thought he was the best character. Being a little guy I then had to try Yoshi myself and it wasn't long before I too came to the conclusion that Yoshi was the strongest character. I mastered the art of the Yoshi and I've been maining him ever since. Smash 4 is going to be Yoshi's time to shine, I can feel it.

I main Bowser in Project M. I tend to try and control the stage with my massive hitboxes and size, and pressure my opponents off stage for early kills.
It's hard to keep Bowser off of you in the neutral game when he's so huge and has all that armor. Sure he's slow, but his attacks deal a lot of shield damage on top, too.
I also seconday Doc, since he's my Melee main as well. He's a hell of a lot more viable in P:M though.
Usually by how much I like the character itself, but playstyle also factors into it
more technical characters are always fun, so villager, robin and shulk seem good
