Are disks just about obsolete? I haven't used a disk drive in almost a decade, and blu-rays were already too small back when Skyrim came out.
>>

hell no. still by far the cheapest way to store data. and not everybody has internet connections that can download 30+ GB games in a few hours.
>>
Blu rays are fine.

Depends on what they're used for.

For games? Yes. Discs have absolutely no purpose there. For archival of small files? Discs are way more practical than anything else.

I don't know why they don't make small and cheap read-only usb drives for game installation and movies instead of disks. It's probably even cheaper at this point.

You consolebabies need to understand that just because you have a physical copy of the game doesn't mean you own it. Microsoft can stop service to your console at any time, they can stop supporting or brick your hardware which is the only thing you have to play your silly disc with.

The only way to truly own a game is to own a DRM free copy on a free operating system, or to have a ROM image of it for use in an open source emulator.

disks are unbeatable when it comes for archival of games/music/chinese cartoons

these little 4,7 GB fucks can hold your data for 10-20 years when treated nicely and BD disks are eternal and hard to destroy by accident

hard drive disks and home servers hold much more data but the thing is you need to spend money to power them, to replace faulty drives in RAID matrix (and what if all of them fail at once? this can happen too) and are writable so it's not hard to lose everything on a freak accident. meanwhile, you break one CD and it's no big deal since others are safe and you just have to replace that one.

if you haven't already, start burning your favourite stuff. files on the internet last only until someone decides to pull a plug of the server

>It's like you want to get raped by Valve/EA/Microsoft/whoever you buy games from.

Almost 90 percent of the physical copies require some sort of authentication from steam/origin in order to play them. Fuck i got a a copy of skyrim, put in the disc and all it did was give me a key to download it from steam.
>>
Yes & no.

Holographic disc holds <100TB
<100TB would be great for games. Not just now, but for the future when higher quality assets can be displayed fully.

Assets should not be degradded for games. Engines should select to what degree asset complexity can be rendered. The more complexity is made the better.

Hard drives, like processors stopped getting better about 10 years ago. Leveled off around 1TB. SSDs have been getting cheaper.

Piracy has demonstrated it is the ideal distributor of content. If hard drives inccreased in size, speed and cost discs could cease to matter.

People have stopped demanding quality. Actually demand stupidity. I blame education.
Things getting better is not a requirement anymore, so while capacity of storage should be important, to most it isn't and the majority is what degenerates aim at.

>>262281736

Discs still massively destroy your average user's bandwidth in terms of throughput. I can drive to the store, buy the game, drive back home and play probably two or three or four hours worth before it would finish downloading.

This is only going to become more relevant, since the number one thing that takes up disc space is graphical assets like textures. Textures are only going to become bigger and more detailed with time. Titanfall was floating around 70 gigs, and that game barely runs at 1080p. The eventual advent of 4k is only going to amplify this problem.
>>
>>262283254
I've thought about this before. I figure that it's because discs are a lot easier to produce, thus will always be cheaper in mass.

Ok why, price aside because neither of us knows which would be cheaper if they put some effort into it.

It's smaller, doesn't spin in the drive, it reads faster, time seeks are nearly instant, they hold much more data (won't need to be replaced with new resolution, FPS, HDR, or quality standards)

You have no idea what you're talking about. Titanfall's file size was due to retarded compression, not textures. TF textures are shit. They look early last gen textures. The game is only made bloated to trick dudebros into thinking the massive file size means a massive game.

>This is only going to become more relevant, since the number one thing that takes up disc space is graphical assets
And what happens to bandwidth over the course of time? Does it stay stagnant?
>>
>>262285602
120GB is fuck all to fill with content. Especially for a non repedative environment.

For a 800TB Game, it would be much faster and probably far cheaper to get it sent to you as a disc or several, than to download.

Getting a hard drive and getting it filled from a store, or someone would be ok as well.

I'd like to see far higher quality everything, including audio.

Multiple areas of reading could be used. Top and bottom. Reading speed should be far higher than download speed. Easilly exceeding the pathetic current processing speed.

Okay, fine. Titanfall was a bad example. BF4 was still a 35 gig download.

And internet speeds HAVE stagnated, at least in the United States. Whatever small progress that has been made is drastically outpaced by the exponential increase in the file size of video games. There's also the good chance that Verizon, et al. will get their way with the FCC and the net neutrality issue and we'll see legitimate bandwidth throttling.

Considering the PS3 and PS4 aren't backwards compatible, even with PSN games, I don't know why they even think they have shit on Valve.

When your PS2 finally dies, buy another if you can, or enjoy buying them again from PSN, and then again when the PS5 comes out (implying it ever will).

Now that consoles are based on x86 hardware, we might see some form of standard that will let generations be backwards compatible, but that just echoes that consoles are stripped down, DRM computers that don't even need to exist.

The US is infamous for having outdated internet speeds. Go to any country in western Europe and you'll see that 100/100 connections are the standard ones. On a 100MB connection, a file size like 35GB is nothing. It's much more convenient and faster than going to the store and getting it physical. Hell, on a 100MB connection, bandwidth stops becoming the problem and the HDD space instead becomes the bottleneck.

HDD do die. Infact they die quite often in consoles, where they are hard to replace because they need older formats or require a certain size.

If your original Xbox HDD dies, kiss the whole system goodbye. You can't even replace the HDD without having first softmodded and backed up the eeprom

another advantage PC/Steam has over consoles is that the online features of games typically last forever, unlike consoles where when they die, they require mountains of reverse engineering work to get working, something that will only happen for games with dedicated communities.

>>262289804
That's actually the basis for most engineering too, your boss doesn't want something to last 30-40 years like a bridge when you're making a "toy" that only someone with a disposable income would want to buy. So making it so the product becomes obsolete a 5-6 year time is preferable since it gives time to make larger improvements and also make up any losses from the initial sale, like how Sony decided to sell the PS3s at losses and making up for it with add-on purchases or PS+ subs.
>>
>>262289509
Microsoft can. They have for 360 users who modded their consoles and played online. Microsoft comply with govt and integrate backdoors into their OSs.

Microsoft is in no way a good company.

XP outperforms 7 & 8. It doesn't recieve updates now.

Buying microsoft ensures buying something with a short lifespan. Intentionnaly made with problems and limitations.
>>
>>262290029
I still like knowing I can always get some friends together and play an older game online.

And in many cases older titles have niche communities that build around them. Or even big communities, like UT99 that people still play. Even Doom. Those niche communities really add spice to online gaming, I say.

That isn't impossible on consoles, but it's much, much harder to preserve the online.

No one needs protable storage like that any more because everything has a hard disc and soon everything will have an SSD

>mfw the only thing you can get is wireless despite living in the inner suburbs because telstra are a bunch of jews

It's better than nothing but when you can barely hit 1 megabyte download you know you're country has third world internet.

Ron Moore is a hack who was so desperate to keep the show alive that he willingly shat all over plot and character consistency.

Read-only SD cards produced with optical stenciling... this could work, since disks have a limit how narrow their track widths can be because moving parts, a problem solid state cards would avoid.

SSD's will always be half a decade behind traditional mechanical HDD's. And to me, the speed difference isn't enough to justify the much higher dollar per GB ratio.

I remember watching a segment on news here in Canada in a town where no ISP wanted to go since it wasn't profitable so the citizens of the region organized but providers tried to jew cellphone plans and such rather than actual good internet so they said fuck it and got it on their own and they payed like $50 per year for unlimited data but I don't think they mentioned the speed.

The current ISPs need competition.

SSD's what? HHD's what?

It's about 60 bucks a month here for unlimited 1gbps. They even install fibre for free in your house. I have no idea how they make money,

I never understand companies. Here are customers more than willing to give them cash if you give them a decent product (Cable broadband at least, since who knows when the NBN will happen). But instead they go nah fuck ya, we have the rights, the technology but can't be assed.

They need to build infrastructure, hire workers in that region, set up offices etc.. sometimes it's not worth it.

If we're going to be grammar nazis then a HHD isn't the same thing as a HDD even though they serve the same purpose.

>scandinavia
you're thinking of sweeden.
norway is lagging behind western europe, and is not a top tier contry for internet. probably because of low population density making it too expencive to expand. at least we have no bandwith limits, and nobody goes after pirates in any way.

How stupid can you fucking sound? Thats like saying theres a difference between a ps4 and wii u and you reply "Cant you just call them video gaymes? Jesus christ"

>SNES still works fine
>Genesis still works fine
>Atari 2600/7800 still work fine

The NES would probably be just as reliable had they kept it a top loader like the Famicom.
You still have the NES model 2 which will probably work just as long as the SNES.

>Microsoft can stop service to your console at any time, they can stop supporting or brick your hardware which is the only thing you have to play your silly disc with.

They could but it could create a shitstorm of the worst magnitude. You think people are going to buy Xbox consoles if they knew that Microsoft can stuck lighting on their console brick if Microsoft pisses them off.

Xbox consoles are the leasted targeted for modding, and pirating. It's jthe bricking thing is ust a bluff to scare pirates/modder trying to homebrew their consoles.
