Her relationship with her husband was bad. She got hurt a lot in it. The divorce happened, and the relationship was over but it left deep scars on her psyche.
This makes her change her approach to relationships: instead of the normal sharing of vulnerabilities, she does everything she can to not get hurt again. This includes controlling Eron, punishing him severely for transgressions, lying constantly to keep him in a reality she creates, and if all else fails, control him be threatening suicide.
Now, those are symptoms of what happened. So why did she think she was depressed?
Because of the relationship with the ex-husband. That's an emotional crucible that will make her feel really sad, and might be similar to depression, but the key difference is that depressed people change because they're depressed. Zoe had a catalyst that she wants to avoid. She's running from what she thinks is her depression with what she does to spouses.

My name is James, I am a 23 year old Newegg fan and user. I am emailing you in order to make a complaint about Kotaku, a company that you sponsor with ads. Kotaku's contributors have taken to twitter these past days to engage in bullying, petty fighting and haranguing of various online figures as well as insulting their readers. I do not care for internet drama but I would like to think that logging on to my twitter account would be a pleasant experience; these past days, it has not been. Every time I visit Kotaku I see numerous posts regarding this issue, further contributing to my annoyance. Seeing your advertisements grouped with this image has coloured my perception of your brand and I will be reluctant to purchase any products with Newegg in future due to this association. I strongly urge you to pull your ads from Kotaku, it is alienating your core audience, which is at this time planning to boycott the website en masse and use ad blockers. By discontinuing this relationship I believe that you might go up both in my estimation and in the estimation of many others like me who are very tired of Kotaku's poor journalistic practice and PR.
