You don't even have to do that in the new Pokemon games. You'll be grossly overleveled for the E4 by the time you finish by battling the trainers as you get through the storyline.

I mean, I can understand losing to a gym leader and picking up a new pokemon to counter, and then requiring to grind up 5-10 levels to bring it to an acceptable range. However, in general? You should have a number of different pokemon and be able to handle most fights that way. Who really grinds all the way up to lv.25 off of some lv.2-lv.6 wild pokemon?

I felt quite disappointed by Pokemon White as well.
I don't think you're done with the game, though. Unless you've beaten N's dad and got the legendary pokemon, you still have a bit to go.
Once you're done with the main story, though, you have a few more routes open up. You will have Black City to visit, plus some caves to explore. You also have swarms, and... that's pretty much it.
Yeah, White ultimately disappointed me and turned me off the series. No more Hilda really didn't encourage me to try any other games either.

the proper way to play is to run from all wild fights unless you want to capture the pokemon, and fight every trainer along the way. this puts you at a perfect level curve, unless you get to a gym leader whose type happens to wreck your chosen team. which happened with Clay in Black for me, Ground was supereffective against 4 guys on my team and I didn't have anyone who could SE against it.
But other than that hiccup, it was a great run.

I'd say that simply playing and fighting with the pokemon you like is fun in itself. It's nice to see your favorites come out on top of a fight, even if it is difficult or otherwise impossible to do so. Pokemon combat isn't exactly deep or interesting by itself, so there isn't much difference between grinding or just normal battling outside a few specific situations.

Yes. The game is really easy in the beginning. It also seems really long in the beginning.
But after like the third or fourth gym their levels starts to pick up and the gyms gets much closer to each other.

Kingdra wasn't weak to ice anyways, and the only damaging dragon move was Dragonbreath (which you got from beating her, as I recall).

Biggest change was with Gen 4's introduction of the phys/special split.
Pretty much every move is now given a type as well as a Physical/Special/Status classification which determines which attack stat its power is drawn from.
Also tons of tweaks that make competitive gameplay a real thing.

Not only does it limit you to >lv.10 characters before the first gym (in most cases) it also means that pokemon that you've raised since the beginning suddenly start acting randomly. Plus, it kind of goes against the whole point of it being a RPG, where you can just gain levels if things are too difficult for you to deal with.
