A set base HP pool, stamina pool, and equip load, modifiable by magic items, with different weapons and armor to choose on which are non-upgradable but generally get better as you go through the game. Then you decrease the enemy scaling by a whole bunch to account for the player not getting enormously more powerful by the end of the game.
It would be a lot more fun. Just worry about what gameplay style works the best for you and how you want to look, with your success being determined entirely by your ability to effectively use what you choose.

And no, that's not really how it works now. Enemies get fairly steeply scaled stat boosts throughout the game to deal with player stat progression. That doesn't lend itself to overall balanced design. It forces the player to level up themselves and their gear (or for the advanced, mostly just their gear) in order to keep up, but this often leads to players ending up in positions where they've trivialized combat they haven't actually mechanically mastered, or on the other hand being unable to reasonably fight with the enemies at all.

Sorry, I misinterpreted what you were saying. I thought you were saying that enemies would still get stronger, but the player would find stronger weapons to compensate.
Anyway, I still like it the way it is. I enjoy the little extra feeling of progression that leveling up gives you, as well as having to make those decisions and choose which stats to prioritize. It also gives the possibility to artificially limit yourself by keeping your stats low, which can be fun for experienced players. I get what you're saying now though, that could definitely work too.

I loved the attention not just to swords but to shields as well. Numerous abilities for offence and defence.
Two handed weapons had a feeling of genuine weight and power to them. The Arc moves are incredibly satisfying to hit with.
Daggers are fast and have great acrobatic abilities. Sheering Wind or whatever had you flying all over the place with that awesome single slicing motion
