The problem with 12 is that it tried to be a giant open world but have a super linear story. But also that the writer quit half way in the game so the story feels half finish. If they somehow fixed those problems it could have been way better.
Honestly I never really understood why FF is considered the best JRPG series. I hate the NES games. SNES are cheesy fun for what they do. The PSX feel like they focus so much on story that the game really suffers. X and XIII are too linear to be enjoyable.

Every single emotion I could think of were expressed to their fullest at at least some point, the characters were all fucking awesome, and Chapter 3 was fucking genius. Like I used to think Chapter 3 was the only bad chapter in the game, but then when I thought about it more it's the perfect example of mechanics as metaphor. When you're grinding in the beginning you connect with Salsa so fucking much with how much tedious work he's being put under as a slave who can't speak up for himself because he's a monkey, then later when you're delivering those boxes around Tazmily you don't even realize what you're doing until the second half of the game where Tazmily starts falling apart because technology is ruining the town and the environment. Technology that YOU, THE FUCKING PLAYER were forced to give them.
It's art. It's fucking art. I almost never say this about vidya and I hate the faggots who constantly spam "VIDEO GAMES ARR ART" everywhere but this is pure fucking art.

Maybe since I come off Devil Survivor and SMT4 I should expect the fusion system to not be as free but having to gather demon data cores being the only way to pass down skills properly makes fusion feel really tedious.
I can complain about the saving system in the dungeons but you get used to it and I love how annoying the dungeons are because that's what dungeon crawling in about.
Also the extra almighty element attack attack tag sytem in battle sucks. Doesn't help much in boss battle and limits team variety forcing to use demons of same alignment. I don't get why some SMT fans complain about press turn system

It's a good system, and certainly much more free than the one in Devil Survivor 2. It allows you to get any skill on any demon. They are also optional, you don't have to use them to beate the game.

It helps a lot, especially during bosses like Ouroboros and Jack. You can get some insane damage every turn for free, how is that not helpful? Also you have a choice whether to get a demon you want which happens to be a different alignment or keep the co-op attack. The combat system is also more exciting than getting press turns because there is an element of uncertainty when it comes to attack order.

Not being able to distribute points, something I can do even in Soul Hackers is not a good idea. They could have still kept the balance of the game like they do in other SMT games easily, especially with the difficult bosses and the demon co-op system. You can't abuse magic since the MC can't learn any so distributing your points is not a bad idea. Hell, it's just randomizes on where each point goes to. You have to admit it's flawed around this.
You don't need the demon source codes to beat bosses and it certainly has more freedom than Devil Survivor games but passing down without it is pretty much tedious. I can't pass down resist ice to a demon weak to ice unless it's in a d-source but I can pass down resist fire to a demon already strong with fire. That's the whole point of the system where you have to use the demon sources if you ever want decent demons.
Still not a fan of the co-op system but we can just argue about that for hours.

I remember coming into Chrono Cross expecting something wonderful like Chrono Trigger. Instead, I got a convoluted mess with good music. I'll give Squaresoft points for trying to do something different but it feels like Chrono Cross ruined all the positive momentum Chrono Trigger built up.
One day I'll replay it to see if I'm just being too harsh towards it, but I have this feeling a second playthrough will just leave me thinking less of it.
