It doesn't help that until sorta recently custom models weren't even a viable design choice unless you wanted to cut content because of the hella small map size.

It was some kind of team-based island defence thing. It used the space marine models and you were able to chose a certain element-based marine to defend with. The element you chose determined the marines abilities, obviously.
On a segment of the island, separated from the shops and healing fountains by a tiny land strip (in later versions the island was segregated and you teleported there) were a shitload of the monsters everyone had to kill to advance a round or something. That was the entirety of the game, and it was fucking god-tier.
It died out completely by around 2005, if I remember correctly, and was never ultra popular in the first place. Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

I do not miss those maps a whole lot. I preferred the maps that just used the stock models. Until the really well done low-poly models started coming out. Then shit got interesting.

Hell, I remember that the most fun I had with these "anime arena" maps was with Anime Fight.
It used stock models and shit but, damn, it was fun as hell.
