Ashley actually has a smash trophy and had a post dedicated to her. So you can see her in the game, use the trophy and she will hang out with you for a while. You can even make a Mii of you and be with Ashley for a short while.
That's a very special honor, it's the best thing a character can get short of actually being playable.
It means she's big, just not big enough to be playable. But she's in their radar, they know people love her and they love her as well.
Other characters have gone from trophy to playable before and she does have interesting move set potential.
She has red. He can be an assist that hangs around her and helps her , making her a puppeteer character like Rosalina and Luma or he can transform into multiple things as well giving her great utility.
She has magic, can fly around transform people and shoot lightnings and other stuff. Spellcasters are very fun to design and unique so gameplay wise, she has potential as well.
Next smash will need some new characters and Wario Ware is long overdue for a new character and she might just be the right choice, who knows.
Or she could be DLC if Nintendo wants to keep the hype machine going in the future.
