The company that made Body Harvest goes on to become the company to create Grand Theft Auto.
Body Harvest is *essentially* a primitive form of Grand Theft Auto. Guns, weapons, ammo, vehicles, missions, big world maps.
I don't actually give a fuck about GTA. I live in Los Angeles and work as an ambulance operator. If I wanted to see real life crime and pleb shit going on, I'd just go to work.
Body Harvest, however, has fucking EVERYTHING. Man-eating aliens. Time Travel. Evil Twins. Sandworms. Zombies. Lasers. Fuckin' giant boss fights including a giant enemy crab, which is based of actual world history.
Body Harvest comes highly recommended, much better than the casual shit known as GTA.

Europeans are keeping the sim genre alive, albeit with bad sims. In fact, europeans have been quite a bit more simterested than other markets, historically. You'll find a lot of cool econo-sims to have their origin there.
Consoles might be a reason, albeit a weak one. There's plenty you can do on consoles. I'm afraid the major issue is making gaming a purely profit oriented business. Sims, at least the variety we had and loved, just aren't profitable. You need a shitload of work to get a good simulation done, but you'll only reach a small audience with interest
