I play as a certain gender depending on my stereotypes on what would be better for the class. Archer would definitely be female as I think as female's to be more agile, flexible etc. A speed class also I would play as a female. If I'm playing a tank/Great sword type character than I will pick a male. It's just based off of my stereotypes and hell, having a bit of variety in playthrough's are great either way.

Why I play females most of the time in games when given the option
in a game with character creation there are usually only 2 options, the buff, strong, bulky male. Or the thin, beautiful, delicate female.
I am 6'1 and weigh 150lbs I am quite thin and do not really think of myself as fitting into that Beef McLargehuge category for males.
as such I usually pick the female character since they match my body structure more closely in relative size and mass.
In games where it is possible to play a male character that isn't ripped as shit and just over the top in muscle mass I tend to make a thinner male and play happily.
This is especially true in fantasy games since I tend to want to play the wizard or spellcaster classes and it never made sense to me that a spellcaster would be bench pressing three times his IQ every day at the gym before going out and casting fireball
tldr: male characters to buff, females less buff, I like that better
