True, but don't go too far. Creating your own 3D engine is a complete job. There's nothing wrong with using existing software / libraries. Just make sure that the end result is something you made.
Protip: find an aspect of game development you like (story, animations, audio, level editing, etc.) and make a mod for some popular game (this is the main reason I like Skyrim: its Creation Kit).

If you're wondering why death marches happen so often, it's because publishers have deadlines like, say, the holiday season. Now, add in the possibility of unrealistic expectations from the game pitch (thanks sales aka "those guys who will sell a product based on shit they think can totally be done while the developers would say FUCK OFF WE CANT DO THAT" then collect a bonus for making a deal while the dev team gets fucked) conflicting with the game designer's vision conflicting with marketing's "Do X Y Z for sales plz" dictates and you wind up with so much shit that gets wasted left and right before we even get into testing shit and discovering what features don't work. You basically go back and forth and crank out stuff that will never make it to the final product and funny ideas that sounded good until you actually seriously attempted to code them... oh yeah. Then near the end shit hits the fan, whips get cracking and you have to work overtime to crank out something playable before release.

Mobile dev guy here. That's what I did, but I got really lucky. The degree it's worthless. The effort you put into your resume and portfolio gets you a job, the education helps you get started.
My degree place was awesome, but it was unnecessary, if you have motivation. It really helped me learn to program, which I never would have done I my own

I'm in the exact same boat. I do like when people compliment my cooking, like for instance I just made fettuccine alfredo formy girlfriend'sfather and stepmother, whom normally just buy a jar of alfredo sauce (boggles my mind). They thought it was fucking great (bland imo, I need to do more with it), and it felt good that they really liked it, but I didn't enjoy the process of cooking it in the least.

Ferris state university. Great people, pretty cheap. But not the best, and certainly won't guarantee you job.
If you live out west, for sure go to gdc to find out what the industry is like. Tons of people will give you advice.
Gdc is pretty mandatory in my opinion. Otherwise, you never really get how to get a job in the industry
