Yesterday we had a thread
a thread with a poll to decide what should be the official / go-to fighting game for scrubs interested in getting into fightan
>http://boards.deniableplausibility.net/v/thread/254432812/

SSFIV won handily

so, want to get good at fightan? this is where you start
>Post PSN / XBL / SteamID

>But what if somebody who isn't a scrub comes in and wrecks it for everybody!?
Post their PSN / XBL / SteamID, number of games played against them, and if you were flawlessed / perfected and the number of times that happened so others can either avoid them or play against them to get gud

>What if somebody posts my info and I AM a scrub?!
we'll know from your total play time and from anybody challenging you thinking you're good

>But I don't have that game!
buy a PHYSICAL copy from amazon, they're $9 USD, ~$12 with shipping unless the digital version goes on sale on steam [pc]

>But I'm broke and can't afford even that!
beg and hope somebody takes pity on you, or take part in the following poll http://strawpoll.me/2177426

I wish Capcom would do something creative with new design, instead of "lol, here's a mask, new character."
But again, these people made Evil Ruy, so creativity is just an empty word for them.

decapre is like 15 years old character, also the most played from the 5 new characters. and even so, capcom revamped her design a little with the new mask, the bladed gauntlet and the psycho-power i love her design.
Also you obviously didn't play the character, she's a mix of honda and claw on crack and the first charge character to legitimate have mixups, Decapre is dope

Is Juri good for a beginner??
>>
>>254537071
>want to get good at fighting games?
>start by playing other people who suck online!
No. Just...no.

If you want to start with SF4, find a character you like and hit the trials to learn how to cancel and combo.

After you understand that system, find someone to play with and just try to block as best you can. Jump attacks and overheads you have to hold back, low attacks you have to hold down-back.

Once you don't suck at comboing and blocking you can start playing online and working on poking and anti-airs.
>>
>>254537071

>>
>>254545427
God, no. Juri is the only character in the game that actively requires a stick. Avoid.

>>
>/v/ is literally having a scrub general

>>
>>254545638
This.

VS CPU and VS new players will do nothing except teach you terrible terrible habits that you'll have to unlearn.
>>
i think blazblue or some other anime fighter would be better. yea they have omg 50 hit combos but anyone can also pull off 5 hit normal into specials into super combos their first try, which is a huge confidence boost.

theres some work in street fighter before you can get anywhere near decent. if a newbie needs a confidence and some wow factor he should start with an anime fighter. SF is def good for spacing and footsies tho. being able to stand up to veterans shouldn't come into the equation at all for fresh blood. hope that's not why SF is the apparent choice, neither should it's history. the first fighter doesn't need to be your first.
>>
>>254545894
You act like this thread is only for the very beginning people I have no doubt some of the other fighting game players on here who are still on the big climb like the rest of us may play and share some stuff they know. But fighting people who are WAY above your level is going to provide even less help.

That's the impression the OP gave.

If you know how to combo and block, then you're ready to face the general public and can learn from getting your shit pushed in. If you can't learn from getting fucking rekt then you're not ready for online.
>>
>>254546215
no it isn't
if you play even a mid level player and the shit you try to do starts to work you know you're really on to something and starting to understand something important about the game

if you wait until you're "comfortable" to fight players better than you spoilers that will be never and you"ll never improve

if you had the opportunity to ONLY fight top players and you didn't take it you're stupid

but playing other beginners is the best way to build confidence. you can't just give somebody whose only just learned to add and subtract complete control over building a suspension bridge. it's the wrong way to go about teaching geometry

the way I propose to do it has scrubs playing scrubs and when they amass enough wins they feel good about it and try playing someone better [the whole making a list of good players so they can be called out later and not just avoided], lose a bunch but don't get discouraged because they KNOW they CAN win and have a incentive to practice so they can win more against better players

>>254546153
>i think blazblue or some other anime fighter would be better.
it's a little late for that, I didn't only post that poll last night but during the day yesterday and the thread 404'd with a total of 2 votes and no posts. so it's your fault you weren't on it when the voting was happening

>>
>>254546952
you get confidence by getting good
you don't get confidence by pretending to be good

if you're just trying random things versus someone else who's trying random things and you feel "good" after you win you're stupid you might as well have rolled dice in the corner while beating off

>>
>>254546952
>but playing other beginners is the best way to build confidence
Confidence doesn't mean shit. Confidence is fucking worthless. What matters is execution and understanding.

If you are a novice and you play other novices, you're both going to be flailing around, failing to punish, jumping constantly, etc. etc. You'll build terrible habits and learn nothing.

If you get absolutely fucking rocked by a good player, at the very least you'll get experience blocking mixups and you'll see the way they maneuver and act.

I understand your logic, but scrubs playing scrubs doesn't lead to improvement.
>>
>>254548630
Confidence does matter any sort of competition requires confidence
>>
>>254548630
>but scrubs playing scrubs doesn't lead to improvement.
yeah, it leads to scrubs playing good players which does lead to improvement like you said yourself
>>
>>254548630
>>254546952
Put it another way:

I'm a lot better at fighting games than my friends are. A lot. They run the gamut from complete button-mashing moron to basic competence, but they're not at my level.

When the mid-level guys play me, they almost always lose, but every time they get better. Every time they block a mixup better, or use their wakeups better, or punish a move better, or jump less. As I fight them I end up training their habits. If they constantly jump they get AA'd, so they start sticking to the ground. If they throw out unsafe moves they get punished so they stick with what's safe. If they try to mash DP when getting combo'd I'll purposely drop and block to punish. Every time they fight they learn something new and improve.

If they fight the idiot button masher, they learn literally nothing. If they fight each other it may be even, but they learn much less than when they fight me.

Is this making sense?
>>
>>254548996
the people who need to "build up confidence" to "tolerate" a few losses versus players better than them will never ever be good at fighting games

if you can't handle losing over and over in ANYTHING competitive you will never be good

Why do you need to start with scrubs v scrubs

That's an unnecessary step that, as said before, will lead to bad habits. Instead of starting from zero you're taking people into the negatives.
>>
>>254548309
OP are you talking scrub like you have some knowledge of basics and fundamentals of Fighting games?
>>
>>254549795
That's not necessary. If OP or anyone else wants to get better that's great.

You're just not going to get better fighting people who don't know what they're doing. You're going to get worse.

If that's their attitude then they'll never improve anyway

If you want to be good at fighting games you have to actually, y'know, WANT it. It's an undertaking, and one you will fail at again and again before really seeing improvement.

It does if there's a starting point besides getting hype from evo then there's a chance. This is just a group effort to start something maybe someone will grow into their local community. This is a first step.this is a book I've been reading and seems to be very informative if anyone wants to check it out.

Please don't misunderstand, I appreciate what you're trying to do. The FGC always needs more players and it's great that people are willing to coordinate with people who want to learn and help them get started.

My only issue is with encouraging low-skill players to play other low-skill players.

Instead, I'd recommend getting two lists of IDs: scrubs and veterans. Scrubs can play the veterans instead of each other, and that way they'll actually learn. Plus, since the vets know they'll be playing new players, they can focus on teaching instead of just stomping (for example, constantly jumping to teach anti-air)
