It DOES use NFC technology. It has been confirmed that you can play without NFC figures (as implied by the comparison to normal AI enemies as opposed to NFC ones, otherwise there would be no comparison).
Also, every character will very likely be unlockable without the figures.
The quality of the figures has been seen to be pretty decent, especially for their confirmed price of comparable to Skylanders figures (10-15 USD).
Basically, they're bonuses. You do not need them at all. You can play with or without them.

I think I'm pretty good at it. I beat the Smash 64 Single Player without dying on Very Hard recently (to confirm my suspicions that you indeed do not unlock Metal Mario), and I've almost made it through Brawl on Intense Mode (I always get fucked by Master Hand for some reason, even though I beat Boss Battles on Intense).

Amiibos are a stupid little toy Nintendo's making. It locks up the content of having a custom AI that you can train, a feature not in the game normally. They can be customized and used in various games. They cost around 15$, to do something that could easily have been done with a USB, and some in-game button to reach the content. Most people won't use them because they're toys, and they're definitely not something worth having 100 shitposting threads over.
