Alright I beat the first level on 3DS.
I will say the definitive version is the 3DS version. The 3D is really well done, and this kind of game is just extremely more cozy on a handheld.
Pirate the PC version to see if this is your cup of tea (if it isn't then you are an uncultured swine), and then buy the 3DS version (since 3DS piracy ranges from impossible to extremely difficult). Trust me, the 3D and comfyness of the 3DS version makes it worth it.

You never playing a side scroller ever. Besides Castlevania and Metroid games which is a bit of a miniority. 2D side scrollers mostly lasted 1 or 2 hours. If Shovel Knight is 6 to 7 hours. It is greatly longer than most of them. And is significantly cheaper at launch to boot.
