Left 4 Dead has a solution which is much more elegant, in my opinion. Regular zombies will latch onto you and slow you down, and the player has to either shoot them or use a melee attack to knock them away so they can get free again. I don't see why the developers couldn't have done something similar, instead of weakening the player's immersion with a big button prompt and a canned animation.

It's because of what started the combo and the team composition that the scaling was so low. It's a 2v1 team setup so the single char has a -lot- more HP. Then since the assist char (Double the big blue blob) started it, it scaled down a lot to top it off. Hornet Bomber (the attack the assist was using) proccs damage scaling really hard because of how good of a lockdown assist it is. It's relatively low risk so it is low reward to balance it out.
Solo chars do a lot more damage in their individual combos and while teams generally require meter to super cancel into eachother and extend their combo damage output.

I don't really think that would fit the monster design, if a necromorph grabs you then it's gonna start killing you. Not to mention it'd still be a bit awkward due to being a third person shooter, it'd look silly if Issac was walking around with a necromorph clinging to his leg and you can't exactly do a 180 while that's happening. They'd probably have to root you in place still and the only real difference instead of mashing E would be mashing the mouse buttons to either shoot or smack the thing off.
