What the fuck is with this durability mechanic?
Weapon health in this game is so brittle it seems the only way to play it in a strategic sense is to run around the dungeons, collect shit first, then start killing enemies (sparsely) in the blind hope that one will drop the dungeon key before your weapon crumbles within minutes.
This constant routine of finishing a dungeon level (or even just running out of supplies and you're unable to continue or fight at all) heading back to the home area, going to the mayor, getting his repair items, using one on your nearly broke weapon, talking to him again to get another repair item, leaving, THEN going back into the dungeon...is this really how it's supposed to be like?
The fact that weapon health is so stupidly weak has really turned me off from trying to get into this, since it sets it right from the start of the game.
Once you get a little further you can just buy as much Repair Powder as you want so it's not as much of a problem. Running out of it is only an issue at the beginning when you're relying on the mayor to drip-feed you items.
Although your shit shouldn't be breaking THAT fast unless you're using a really fragile weapon. Even with just the starting Dagger you should be able to easily kill everything on a floor with just the one repair powder the mayor gives you, without worrying too much about it breaking.
Regardless of all that though, weapon durability is a pain for melee characters in the first game because it does go down pretty fast, and some enemies just chew through it insanely quickly. It's one of the things that makes ranged characters significantly better than melee ones, because their weapons degrade at a consistent, fairly slow rate with each shot (barring Osmond's machine guns which also chew through durability).

You get the shop in like an hour or two of play if you're collecting all the Atla like you're supposed to, and the second character another hour or two after that (since she's needed to beat the eighth or ninth floor of the first dungeon).
But again, your shit shouldn't be breaking that fast at the start anyway unless you're using a really shitty weapon for some reason. I always kill every enemy on the floor and never had to leave the dungeon due to running out of Repair Powder, even when I was a retarded kid and only used the Dagger for the entire game.
I cant beat the first boss. Its not that it keeps killing me but im doing so little damage that it just keeps going on and on and on, it never ends. What am i supposed to be hitting cause i keep hitting 1s

pay attention to the kind of monsters you are attacking. If its things like the stone statues and dogs in the first dunegons, and even the dragons, those monsters will where the durability of Toans weapons down very quickly per hit. You are better off killing everything else in the dungeon before them if you dont have element stones or bombs.

He's pretty basic, shoot him with Xiao 'til he lands and then slash him with Toan until he takes off again. If you're not doing any damage I'd say you need better weapons, but starter weapons should be enough to kill him if you've at least levelled them up a bit.

I just bought a bunch of bombs because my weapons were weak. Also, make sure to stock up on bread and water before starting the fight. You just need to grind it out a bit. Give it about 20 minutes of resource gathering and leveling, and you'll be totally set

That makes more sense, fighting a couple statues will wreck most melee weapons. They don't have any higher chance of having the key (it's completely random), so you're better off leaving them for last. Try to kill them with bombs or other throwing items if you can since it spares your durability.

OP, on top of what everyone else is saying, you can find/buy upgrades later on that increase the damage you do to certain monster types and increase the endurance of your weapon. Also don't forget to change what element you have active on your weapon to fit the monster your fighting, the more damage you can do the less you have to swing.

Here's a tip bro, stay around the first two dungeons and use the oil or whatever the special item is to hang out in the back portions of them. The enemies are much tougher of course, but they give you shit tons of weapon exp and there's a HUGE increase in the amount of gems you get. Gem are the best fucking thing to ever exist in that game for weapon increase purposes. Shit, I took a crappy bone rapier and turned it into a 7th Heaven(2nd or 3rd best sword in the game) with very little effort. You can get all manner of crazy things if you exit, run back, run out, run back over and over, or find more mine cart oils to keep heading into fresh back alley zones. Am 100% serious, 1st and 2nd dungeons are the best for this since after awhile the enemies still give lots of exp while not being too difficult like later ones, which only give slightly more weapon exp.

Most people just don't bother to upgrade her weapons once they don't need her anymore because people seem to gravitate towards playing as Toan most of the time.

As a kid I couldn't get past there and stopped playing the game.
Playing it again as an adult I figured out the tactic of making a really powerful weapon and turning it into a synthsphere, then not fusing it into anything so I could equip it on anyone who needed it for limited floors.

Nah, it was a bug caused by weapons being referenced by their names in the game's code. Renaming stuff was just supposed to be a fun cosmetic bonus, like all the other shit you could trade medals for.
It is, at least, harder to do than the Dagger glitch though. But I avoid both because one of the main points of Dark Cloud is upgrading the weapons, and using the glitches fucks the progression curve and makes everything less fun.
