I just finished pic related. Damn nice game, easy but beautiful, and filled with secrets everywhere. Now, I know there's some kind or upside down castle or something so, how do I access it? Because I don't believe the 'kill Richter' ending is the good one.

How is the PSP remake of Dracula X?
>>
>>344533720
>Well, the first thing you need to do is acquire the Gold and SIlver rings. The Silver Ring can be found in the upper-west portion of the Chapel area. You will need the Spike Breaker armor in order to reach the end where Maria will enquire about your findings and leave you the Silver Ring. The Gold Ring can be located after you kill the Succubus. You'll know you're there because the normal Save room "ball-thingy" will be purple instead of brown. She's easy, so don't fret. After getting both rings, head to the center area with all the clocks(The path that leads upwards to Olrox's Quarters and the Colliseum) and put them both on. The path below you will open up, and you'll head downwards and speak to Maria. She'll give you an item called "Holy Glasses". Where these when you fight Richter and you'll see a green orb above his head.

Dracula x is ok, but honestly not on the level of SoTN

Dracula X I enjoyed although its really a remake of Rondo of Blood, not Dracula X; which was a modified version of Rondo to make work on SNES. I liked Rondo better.

But the game as a whole is awesome, it includes original Rondo and SOTN as secondary unlocks. Probably my favorite PSP game.
>>
>>344533826
Good, I already have the Gold Ring, so I'll just have to find the Silver one.

>>344533949
Yeah, I played Aria last year and as I was playing SotN I couldn't stop thinking "it's the same thing". I think I like Symphony more though, the colors are darker and fit better with the tone of the game.

Hmmm, I don't know. It's not like SoTN has amazing level design, and it also has teleport rooms to go from general zone to zone.

While DaS1 doesn't have teleportation at the beggining, and has some neat world design (but worse level design), BB has the most optional zones of any Souls game, relative to % of mandatory zones. The chalice dungeons are reminiscent of SoTN since they are very simplistic in level design and are focused on the combat encounters, but this is more of an aside.

But above all that the setting isn't something that can be easily ignored. Sure it's technically only a visual thing and doesn't affect gameplay but it truly adds up to a 3D Castlevania feel, the best one there ever was (not that being better than the shit N64's castlevanias or the reboot is saying anything)

It's also the only Souls where you can start with a whip, and it's actually viable, unlike the Dark series
>>
>>344540072

They did, but I don't quite get why no other company has tried to replicate this formula, you know?

Ah well, let's see how Bloodstained turns out.
>>
Got Dawn of sorrow a while ago, first metroidvania. Pretty dam good. On Abbadon now but haven't played in a few days. Also not sure if I wanna get the ring that requires all the souls or use boss souls for weapon upgrades and get the ring on ng+
>>
>>344540335
I played the demo and it's safe to say that this won't end up like another Mighty No 9 debacle.
>>
>>344536892
Move Strider a tier up and Kirby one down and it's acceptable. Also how's that Shaman King game?
>>
>>344540473

DoS is amazing. The sequel's a little mediocre, but the first one ends on a very clear note.

Be sure to not get fooled into thinking the game is over before it is.

When you're done with it, if you complete or not, check out Symphony of the Night. Not only will you learn where most of the DoS concepts came from, but you'll also probably really enjoy the game.
>>
>>344539372

Story and setting wise it stands pretty much by itself. It doesn't feel connected to any of the other games. Not saying that's bad. Circle is its own thing. It's a very good gba launch title.
>>
>>344540473

Oh, shit, forget >>344540621. I mixed DoS with AoS.

DoS is mediocre. Play AoS instead.

As in right now. Drop it and play AoS.
>>
>>344540682

I kinda' felt like CoM needed to be it's own thing. Every now and then we need things like that.

Honestly though, Castelvania has never focused much on the overarching plotline anyway.

Use boss souls for weapon upgrades first, maybe the weapon variety will ease the tedium of farming for souls. The ring is broken as fuck but when you get it there's nothing else to do, so you should play the other games instead if you get bored
>>344540621
DoS is the sequel, that's the one he's playing.
>>
>>344540594
I haven't played Shaman King yet, unfortunately. The placement games I haven't played are based off of suggestions and polls on /v/. I probably will move Strider up, I found it pretty boring, but it's better than the other stuff in Meh Tier.
>>
>>344540621
Yeah SOTN looks cool, don't have anything to play it on though. Probably could run it on an emulator
>>
I have the weirdest relationship with Castlevania.

I've played every Metroidvania in the series, and loved all of them to death in their own way, but I cannot fucking stand the Souls games.

What's wrong with me? Everyone, even on /v/ keeps telling me that Souls would be a natural fit for someone who likes Castelvania, but I've never felt it. Not once.
>>
>>344540859
Yeah I was thinking that after how long it took me to get the valkyrie soul for an upgrade i got earlier
>>
>>344540841

I think the only games that are direct sequels connected to each other are:

>1 --> 2
>Rondo --> Symphony --> Aria --> Dawn

Most of the rest are stand alone games, or they only make vague connectiosn to other games.
>>
>>344536097
The original GBA had a dark screen so many games used a bright and colorful palette to compensate. Circle of the Moon looked more like SotN and people complained they couldn't see shit.
>>
>>344540974
What don't you like about them?
>>
>>344540974
Because the only similar thing Souls and Castlevania have are the aesthetics and the interconnected map. All the mobility upgrades are not there, the gameplay is not even close
>>
>>344536892
I thought that Shantae was supposed to be good? Everything else seems pretty spot on from what I played at least.
>>
>>344540974
Souls games are not for everyone. There is nothing wrong with not liking them, I love Metroidvanias but I didn't enjoy DaS and playing after Anor Londo felt kinda like a chore.
>>
>>344540974
Try Classicvania, where enemy positioning matters.

Souls is all about positioning. The Metroidvania series is more about enemies placed so as to kill them quickly for a less frustrating grind.

I like exploring, and customizing, and bosses. Now I know that sounds like Souls in a nutshell, but there's one aspect I think is missing.

No matter if it was Alucard, Soma or even what's-her-name in OoE, the protagonists always felt very responsive to play.

I don't get that from Souls. I know it's suppose to make you feel the weapon's weight or something, but I could never get into it. Maybe that was my problem all along..?
>>
>>344539372
Maybe because it's non-cannon? I don't know, I played the hell out of it back in the day.
>>
>>344541043
>The original GBA had a dark screen so many games used a bright and colorful palette to compensate
This, that's why HoD had one of the worst palettes ever seen. They went overboard after people complained in CotM and the sound quality suffered for it.

Glad they nailed it in AoS
>>
>>344541151
I've only played Pirate's Curse, but it was really mediocre. I wouldn't put it higher that Good Tier. Either the others are better or /v/ just likes it because of the waifus.
>>

>Fusion in good tier when the list is ranking Metroidvanias and Fusion is linear as fuck.

Fix that list dude.
It's got a whopping two (2) blunders in it.
>>
>>344541191

When did you play it? It got updated a year or two after release adding new characters, enemies, bosses and arena along with some balance changes and other stuff. Double jump isn't tied to a magic slot anymore for example
>>
>>344541589

Oh, really? Might put it back on the backlog then. I played on release (starting to think that was a bad idea) and remember the double-jump being a chore.
>>
>>344541542

Souls games still go for a semi-realistic attack speeds. Castlevania games are more video-gamey.
>>
>>344541542
>I did. Same problem.
I don't know what the issue is then, all the Souls games are actually quite precise and responsive in their controls. They actually feel better to play than Castlevania to me.
>>
>>344541228

Did you play the two PS2 Castlevanias? They're almost good. They just don't know how to do it. They share quite a bit of similarities with the Souls games, which get the combat a bit better.

The only thing really wrong with OoE was the glyph system. The weaknesses and strengths of each enemy being tied to weapons you may or may not like made you often forced to play ways you didn't enjoy.
>>
>>344541191
It's less about the grind and more about helping establish a good pace for the player, a way to make all the backtracking and exploration feel less like a chore. It's an important thing to consider in a game like these since if you don't you end up with shit like Mirror of Fate, which stops you constantly to clear rooms of damage sponges and enemies that abuse guarding before letting you move on. It makes the whole game feel tedious and slow.

souls games have very delayed controls. it's because there's almost no animation canceling, and there's a fuckton of cuing. if you know this ahead of time, you can plan your movements a little more carefully than simply mashing the attack button and hoping the enemy dies.

if all else fails, play bloodborne. it's a lot faster paced and more true to the castlevania aesthetic.

It also only took a single dagger weapon in BB to stampede over the dozens of daggers in the Dark games which are mostly ignored. In DaS3 I only used one for Quickstep in swamp levels

When I think of the worst weapons in BB I realise they are all still viable but not to my tastes, while in Dark games they truly aren't viable or fun to use, sometimes entire weapon classes. Quite astounding they didn't fix that in DaS3.

i like the idea of mastering 1 or 2 weapons, it makes the combat more deep than having to have 3 weapons juts to match the attack variety of bloodborne
those BoM are sick

>You could crouch in the bottom-left corner and he would NEVER be able to touch you.
Really? I remember there being certain points where his leg would move up slightly and brush Shanoa's hitbox, which made getting the medal a real pain in the ass. Maybe I was in the wrong spot...
>>
>>344544228
I'm pretty sure they hadn't considering you had shit like fall damage and that godawful, borderline useless map.
>>
>>344545004
Fair enough. Although I just want to give it extra points for that, even if it's cheating
>>
>>344545218

Nah, every time he moved up he gave you 4 possible places to stand.

By standing as close to the left wall as possible at the bottom-left platform, you could use your hammer (the longest ranged weapon you have at that point in the game) to hit him endlessly while he was completely powerless to hit you back.

The only time he could hurt you was when he climbed.

Dark souls is more like a metroidvania than BB in terms of exploration, but BB does have a closer setting and a more stylish whip.

Aside from that, it's pretty decent.

I liked Shadow Complex.

It was a little on the easy side, but I kinda' felt that was because it wasn't designed for M+KB.

IGA actually reinstated CotM as canon before getting dragged out of Castlevania.

>>
>>344546186
I have no idea why CotM needed to be retconned in the first place. It takes place between SotN and the actual Bram Stoker event when there weren't any Belmonts to fight Dracula around anyway.
>>
>>344546630

I don't think Bram Stoker's novel exists in the Castlevania universe.
>>
>>344546462
Does Re-Birth fit into canon? Not that it really matters, just curious.
>>
>>344546707
It does, Bloodlines is a direct sequel. You play as Quincy Morris's son and everything.
>>
>>344546707
The novel doesn't, but the corresponding events of the novel did happen. In the original, non-LoS timeline anyway.
Bloodlines (and by extention PoR) references the event directly, and the Castlevania Morris family is decended from the actual Quincy Morris from the Bram Stoker novel.

Axiom Verge was fun to play, but the story was ultimately unsatisfying. Like, I decypher all of these cryptic notes written in gibberish, and find or imagine all sorts of hints that the giant faces are lying and there's more going on than they admit, and in the end, it all comes to nothing. It's like Symphony of the Night if you never visit the inverted castle.

>I am so tired of her schemes.
Like, who is "she"? One of the Rusalka? Another dimension-hopping earthling? A Sudran indegene? Is this even a riddle, or just a red herring?

I don't think I've seen an "ugly" 8 bit game.

It's all art at that point of low resolution.

That's nice. I'm playing Metroid Prime 1 in Dolphin and it's interesting to finally know where the new Castlevanias come from (even if MP is not the original). I haven't finished it yet but it feels like it has less backtracking than metroidvanias; also every environment is different. Going through more and more castle rooms can get repetitive.

Are metroidvanias like SOTN considered "jrpgs"? After all, you have levels and weapons and stuff.
>>
>>344563723
Not really, just games with RPG mechanics. You can't really make any real customization in terms of stats or story progression...then again there are games like Ys where the same kind applies, but are still RPGs regardless.
Eh, it's a grey area.
