How does a low budget porn game manage to shit all over Nintendo's most established Turn-Base Strategy franchise?
So I finally got around to playing Awakening, and I'm around halfway through it, and my impressions on it thus far are very 'meh.'
It's an ok game, but nothing stellar, and certainly not what everyone hyped it up to be.
Path of Radiance had a better story.
Radiant Dawn had better maps and was far more difficult, AND it had the best units in the entire franchise.
I'm playing on Lunatic, and the game is piss easy compared to previous FE games, since you can cheeseball the game by grinding out your characters, which you will do in order to marry them, and by doing so they all wind up massively overpowered.
I preferred the way it was before, where each campaign basically designated a set amount of experience, so you really had to plan out your army as you played, and each run differed considerably based on how you played. Now you can max out your entire army by killing Risen and doing the DLC.
Also, the pair-up mechanic breaks the game.
Finally, the romance, which is why I brought up Rance. It's very bare bones. The best part of the romance is the character interactions. But they fall in love way too easily and quickly. As a player, I don't feel like I earned getting two characters to pair up, and we get very minimal interaction between them. Only 5 scenes in between battles and that's pretty much it. No hidden events, or scenes, and the rewards are basically how you affect their children's stats.
It's really sad that a game that's mad to wank to managed to create more convincing romantic interactions between characters than FE, and not only that, but the affinity mechanic in Rance was much much better than what Awakening offers.
Overhyped piece of shit I gotta say. It's an alright game, but certainly not worth all the praise.
And I wouldn't even be complaining about the romance mechanic if hadn't been added to the game. It's leaves a lot to be desired, and it's disappointing that's it's what people praise the most, when it's easily the game's weakest aspect, and other games have done much much better.
It's a telling sign when a game goes out of it's way to pander to otakus with waifus and shit. And FE is equally guilty of this. I thought it was a side effect of the new romance mechanic. but it's so piss poor that it certainly doesn't justify it. Yeah, a lot of the characters are very interesting and unique, but we hardly get to know much about them. Compared to Rance where you had entire story arcs and routes dedicated to the girls, and you felt like you really got to know them, FE just feels like a cocktease.
well you pretty much sums up most of my complains with the game.
i literally just tanked my way to the end of the game with great knights and generals insta killing mages and getting 0 dmg from everything else. it was like that until more than half of the game. lame.

Most of Rance's relationship with major girls are in the series are done well with the ironic exception of Sill.
Admitedly the Shizuka thing seemed very rushed at the end but they've spent a lot of time together.
The most likely explanation is that with Rance Alicesoft have the porn scenes for titillation so don't have to rush things elsewhere.
Awakening is a much better game than Rance IX but the plots, character and setting of Rance IX is much better than awakening
if you want a decent FE story without a self-insert, FE4 is your best bet

Well, I'm talking about Sengoku, not Rance IX.
I've only played Sengoku, I, II, and I think III. Oh, and Kichikuou.
In Sengoku though, you learn a lot about every character through their interactions and such throughout the game. I like that FE has characters gain more affinity by battling together, but the way in which Rance also raises affinity between characters through certain requirements and such is the cherry on top. It makes you as a player really have to earn all the stat increases and such gained by pairing up characters and such (or in the case of Rance, the girls fucking him, and maxing out).
It's been a while, but I still remember a lot about all the female characters in Rance, and their interactions. I remember we got to know a whole lot about them, and you really got to know them well while you tried to raise their affinity in order to fuck them, or make them fall in love with Rance. Plus, even after the fact, they all had tons of scenes and such in which they displayed character.
In FE, I start getting interested in characters, and their relationships with each other, but it all goes by to fast. It's like "hi" "hi" some funny base stuff, and then they get married and shit. It's way too quickly, and we never really get to see much about them after that either. Once they're married, it's pretty much end-game for their interactions, and admittedly, a lot were very cute, like Chrom catching Robin naked, and vice versa. All of this shoulda been fleshed out a lot more. I wanted to see these characters fall in love with each other.
Compared to Rance, and the scene where him and Kenshin are stranded in the wild, and wind up hooking up, like, it doesn't even begin to compare.

Rance IX is heavily character focused. It's really quite good.
Even spends a lot of attention on the non Rance male characters like Patton, Rick and even Hubert and Freak.

Not really, cause the porn is censored, and really more humorous than erotic. When I first started playing I began beating off to Suzume's scenes early on, but once I got hooked by the gameplay, it was more about finding guides and unlocking all the secrets and alternate routes and maxing out characters, than the porn.

The visuals, for what they are are alright, it's AMAZING, but it's never jarring or ugly. The character designs show up well, though the animation could be a lot better. The strategizing is among the best in Tactics games. It's way better than any FE, and almost as good as TO.
The game is a bit unpolished, but the gameplay is very solid, and for a low budget game, it's very impressive. Due to charm, replay value, and lasting appeal, Rance's flaws can be overlooked in favor of its strengths.
It's definitely a game I can go back and replay, and still enjoy it just as much each time.

Considering how easy it is to cheeseball FEA, it certainly feels that way. Even Sacred Stones offered up a decent challenge despite being the easiest out of all the PreAwakening games.

Toushin Toshi II by Alicesoft is actually like a great early 1990s JRPG.
Short of Chrono Trigger and FF VI which were a few years later but I'd actually legit call it better than any of the FF games before VI
Rance is garbage, don't kid yourself. People only like it because of the huge amount of ero scenes. The gameplay just makes it seem like it's more than an eroge when it's really not.
