Both demos have been a disappointment. Most games don't even get the luxury of one demo, these days. FFXV's combat seems completely overshadowed by that of Nier Automata, for one example - Type-0, Kingdom Hearts both have better combat as well, FFXV is disappointingly bad in comparison. Can't judge the characters or the plot yet, naturally, but everything else I've seen so far has been rather bad.

Final Fantasy is not a real time action based RPG series Period. No. Debate.
Trying new things never meant being a new genre entirely, and that's what Square has forced on its fans.
They refuse to even make spin offs or sequels that followed the proper formula, no games at all since X-2 and that one was pretty much unplayable because the story was so shockingly embarrassing.
It all boils down to Toriyama, Nomura, and Tabata wanting their own style of game before ever giving their core fanbase what they want instead, and they've done it for so long they've created this melting pot of people that fight all the time. In the end Final Fantasy rightfully belongs to the turn based/ATB community and they should have never had to share with other demographics in the first place.
When it fails it'll be a case of a lion getting slapped in the face, and the world having the nerve to act surprised when it retaliates.

I mean, it's just my opinion of course - but as someone who's been a fan of FF all my lifesince the SNES era - yeah, I'm an oldfag, and as a fan of action games such as Devil May Cry, God Hand, Bayonetta - action RPGs such as Dark Souls, Type-0, Monster Hunter - I've really not been feeling XV. Crush and Descend was always 1:1, in the demos only ravage wasn't. Vanquish and counter were situational. You can get manual vanquish only by tapping from ravage too.
Gamespot uploaded some XV gameplay during E3 and you can see ravage is faster and enemy is pushed back after every hit, unlike in the older demos. That implies more responsive controls.
People who played the Titan demo also say it feels faster and tighter compared to platinum demo.

This is the crux of all the negativity surrounding Final Fantasy XV. When they changed directors from Nomura to Tabata for whatever reason at TGS 2014, the game started to suffer a crisis of confidence especially when what has been shown of XV since has been so different from what has been shown before. Tabata made the statement of "keeping Nomura's vision intact" to try and keep fans on board with the game.
But the trailers went from the whole kingdom invasion scene to bro roadtrip in the span of a little over a year. And then every little small change since has meant that once you see the overall big picture, the game is basically completely different except for some of the characters and some of the pieces of the plot.
There is no way that you can convert fans to a completely vision of the game, even on a little by little basis that XV has been doing, especially when the original vision of the game is what you have been advertising for the last 7-8 years of the game's development lifecycle, which is a majority when you consider the game is supposed to release September 30th.
It's fine to make a game like XV but selling it like it was still similar to Final Fantasy Versus XIII or Nomura's project is just disingenuous. Square Enix would've done better to completely scrap Versus and start from scratch if they were going all of this to the game. The fans of Nomura's vision and Tabata's vision of the game are not interchangeable.
The main problem is that they still haven't figured that out even though they stated the game is not Final Fantasy Versus XIII and are still trying to convert the portion of people that followed Nomura's vision of the game by adding compromise elements of it into XV, even though it half-baked. It's like Tabata doesn't have the balls to sell the game without all the stuff that the game could do without like the flying car "airship" or Moogles or having Noctis and the entire character of Luna.

It's showing them in Altissia which is where they are going because Luna is there, it's showing a 3 way battle between Niflheim and leviathan in Altissia which we even see a shot of in the 2016 E3 trailer, it's showing flashbacks to Noctis and Luna's childhood which we still know happens, it's showing insomnia as a battlefield which we know happens still in the game.
Other than Luna, Regis and Prompto 2013 design changing to their 2014+ design now, all that stuff still happens.

The change in tone and presentation are more of a consequence from them changing so many things, where I disagree that they kept most of the stuff. It's mostly cosmetic stuff they kept and some plot stuff and setting. Everything else since that they developed and showed hasn't fit with the existing vision the public was shown and the stuff that they did change and aren't going back on like redesigning Regis and Stella to Luna that were cosmetically and plotwise different was met with mixed reactions.
But yes, the result is just the fact that the game doesn't appeal to some people anymore. Which is fine but the problem is that Square Enix for some reason is still trying to appeal to that group of people with different stuff.

It's not fantasy enough. Final Fantasy does well when it doesn't deviate too far from it's high fantasy/steam punk roots for too long.
This is why IX and XIV were hits, because they play on the nostalgia of previous games.
We've had sci fi for ages now because of the XIII games.
XV should have been very much a high fantasy game. Like an open world IX, full of air ships and wizards, white mages, red mages, knights, thieves - all of it. Combat needed to be a bit more traditional too.
They made it a "fantasy based on reality" when people probably just want a high fantasy game to escape to.

Don't get me wrong, I'm actually not criticizing the setting, I'm just saying it's the wrong setting for the next installment.
IX did great after VII and VIII because people were ready or a fantasy game again. And XIV does well because it does capture the feel of Final Fantasy, but it's an mmo and that doesn't always go down well with all the fanbase who just want to play a real FF game.
They should have gone with a fantasy setting and then had this realistic setting for XVI
