and that would be that it didnt deviate nearly enough from the tired souls formula- just ditch the idea that it needs to be a slow RPG, make lesser but better areas, develop the gun combat more and make the melee fighting more combo heavy, remove stamina, add puzzles ( great in horror games) etc

What it did right outweighs what it did wrong so much more than any other Souls game.

DaS3 is also up there but it didn't try anything new so I really don't care for it. "No risk, no reward" perfectly describes it.

BB was already fresh with its Gothic/Werewolf/Vampire/Plague theme but it tried even harder and used them as bait for the real eldritch horror theme. No one Souls game does that and it fucking impressed me.

It was the equivalent of Flood being a thing in HaloCE. It's that extra step-up of what you thought the theme was.

DaS2 and DaS3 are nothing more than a contractual obligation for their publisher, and you can feel that. What a waste of time they were. Thankfuly FromSoft can move on to better things now.

Everything, it's a flawed masterpiece and single handedly proves that gaming isn't completely going to shit.

It's the closest thing to a Castlevania (or any old school type game for that matter) game i've played on modern day systems. It's completely different but everything in its design philosophy is damn near identical.

This is why I respect Fromsoft, they don't give a fuck about "muh open world meme", they don't give a fuck about "muh story meme". They give you a game that has all of your "Narrative/lore" in the back ground for those who genuinely want to find it.

No cookie cutter expositions, no cookie cutter QTEs, no cookie cutter cutscene every 2 seconds removing control from the player, none of that shit. Just fantastic gameplay, focuses on boss/level design and some gook magic.

I just replayed it after spending 200 hours in DaS3

I didn't remember it as such a blurry mess, but after a couple of hours I got used to 30 fps and Chromatic Aberration and it's so fucking good that even Chalice Dungeons felt awesome

I mean, visual design, sound design and gamefeel are top-notch, everytime I cut something with Burial Blade or Threaded Cane I feel like I'm really tearing something's skin.

Maybe weapons in Dark Souls are too big and don't have this slick sound when they hit something.

I hope there will be a PS4 Neo remaster with 60 fps without CA

I really love the color palette. Dark Souls felt like a dark fairy tale and Bloodborne feels like illustrations in Lovecraft's books or a nightmare. DaS2 and DaS3 have too bland color palettes, compare something like Firelink Shrine or Cathedral Ward to any location from DaS2 or post-pontiff Irithyll.

Doesn't seem like a problem to me, considering the Dark games were the most underwhelming, appart from DaS (which doens't age too well, the second half is atrocious)

In fact it's a relief that Miyazaki and JapanStudios won't be wasting time with Darksouls, those craprier games will be relegated to BandaiNamco and B-team, while S-team makes new IPs or at the very worst new Souls-likes in a new universe like they've done so far.

Same reason why I'm not mad that Konami ditched Kojima. Now they can keep making mediocre MetalGears while he does his own thing under the banner of Sony's support (I wouldn't be surprised if he's also helped by japanstudios in some form)

there's just a tremendous quantity of recycled material in ds3, whereas they built literally everything in bloodborne from scratch (with the possible exception of the skeleton for the basic dog-type enemies)

it's a damn shame that the textures in bloodborne hold up better upon close inspection than in ds3, but that's what's up. everything about bloodborne just screams, "WE PUT EFFORT INTO THIS," while ds3 feels like a clipboard with a checklist on it

That would require FromSoft to patch the game, it's already more than a year old and hasn't been updated since the DLC released. They won't even fix the frame pacing issues on Dark Souls 3 and it's only like 2 months old.

What is genuinely disappointing is the lore, the only parts that grabbed me were Londo, Ocelotte, and the angels, the new shit they was pushed aside for more fucking references. Who honestly fucking cares about the fading flame? Just a retread of the first game's lore.

However, like DaS2's kings fighting and falling to the curse in the various ages of Dark in the Lost Crowns, they have an opportunity to impress in DaS3's pending DLC.

And if it does it'll be 4 for 4 for From's DLCs fixing their base games.

No way they will do that, some developers aren't even in business anymore and the ones that are didn't sign up for that when they originally made PS4 games. also, compatibility does not mean taking advantage of new hardware

if there are games in the ps4 catalog that can't be played on new hardware speeds, the more likely scenario is that the new system will have a downclocking feature to automatically limit the hardware to the old spec for running those games. in fact that feature is already present in the (unlocked) system software, because dev kits have higher specs than retail and you can set them to retail spec for testing

it's not like ludwig just comes out of fucking nowhere, they allude to him tons of times throughout the base game as one of the greatest hunters of all time who got almost the entire city to rally behind him. He defined an entire age of the Healing Church hunters, had numerous weapons modeled after him, and after the disappointment of not seeing the Moonlight greatsword in the base game, seeing him whip it out in the series first ever mid-boss cutscene while he regains his humanity was fucking incredible.

I actually loved that Eygon and Arina were a hybrid of Garl and Astraea, and Lautrec and Anastacia. It's the perfect capstone to that type of character setup, exactly what the "final souls game" needed, nuance is key when designing callbacks.

but it also bought about new ones, like the glaring quality difference between the dlc and the main game

in the main game you have 2 shitty, underutilised, boring nightmare areas with shitty bosses, in the dlc you have hunters nightmare with ludwig, and fishing hamlet with orphan of kos

seriously, so much of the main game is utterly boring, forbidden woods is long mucky trail through boring enemies, with a few neat shortcuts to distract you from how utterly monotonous the design feels, bygenwerth is criminally short and houses one of the absolute worst boss designs in the series, yahar'gul pre-rom is decent, memorable and Paarl is a good boss, but yahar'gul post-rom is visually more ugly from the "caked in clay red" like look of the buildings, the horrible respawning enemy encounter hordes, and the horrid boss, frontier is useless with a shit boss and tedious enemy encounters like the throwing giants and the poison, mensis has some nice level design, but it feels utterly reiterative of the main game, upper cathedral ward is also criminally short for such a promising atmospheric area, and they have an awful boss to dull the effect of meeting ebrietas, kind of like living failures-maria, witches of hemwick are terrible, and cainhurst is underutilised.

If the game was literally Central Yharnam - Cathedral Ward - Old Yharnam - Pre-rom Yahar'gul - Upper Cathedral Ward Expanded - DLC areas - Cainhurst expanded - an actual developed pthumerian city underground

With higher focus on cainhurst, the birth of yharnam through uncovering the mysteries, more focus on the pthumerians and cainhursts influence, and less focus on the eldritch plot which should have remained much, much more subtle (the encounter with ebrietas should have been an incredibly hidden boss) unless they were willing to develop an actual decent insight system.

It's sad seeing ludwig posters as well, it's like people posting artorias and claiming DaS1 has no flaw

Bloodtinge build is almost nonexistent until chikage and evelyn shows up which is pretty far midgame. dedicated skill build require you to kill important NPC on first sight or you just need to content with shitty cane. arcane build is just pure trash in early game i mean really? a flamethrower and molotov? Weapon gem and rune pretty much uninspired upgrade with nothing special about it. Majority of the bosses lack meaningful lore behind them just another beast hunt and near endgame bosses were underwhelming compared to early bosses. havent played the dlc yet so it might fix some shit.

But that's where the inconsistencey comes into play. Even if you are close to him, if you run out of stamina and don't hit him for a second, he can just decide to use it. When he actually does use it there is no consistency with dodging the attack. Sometimes you do, someirmes you don't. Then there's the damage - at times an insta-kill, others you can take the hit - he'll just cast it again though. Even if you attack him when he's casting the spell, there's no guarantee it will stop him.

I think eternal darkness had a good puzzle system, because it combined the gameplay with the rune system to create a system that rewards player making sensible assessments of both enemy types and environmental situations with a selection of "spells" that alter situations

You had one where you could summon an enemy, using it to do various scenarios in game, spells where you can shield yourself from one of the god's influence, a spell where you reveal hidden stuff (reversed with one of the gods influences by making yourself invisible for a period)

It was really engaging and felt natural to both the games systems, but also the thematic elements of the game

I was at Bloodlevel 75, because i had to restart my game when i got the DLC, somehow the Savefile got corrupted. Died like 19 times to Ludwig and beating him was really hard and i thought this DLC won't get any easier.

Orphan of Kos then, 12th try, got him to the second phase for the second time, then fucking played the best A-game of my life and finished it right there. I nearly popped a blood vessel after that adrenaline rush, i was hysteric for several seconds.

I'll never forget Orphan.

But the "statue" like nature of the great ones in bloodborne's lore makes them ultimately somewhat uninteresting, they almost feel unfinished, and the document begins to make reaching implications about the Pthumerian civilisations, when that content is also unfinished, and wasted through chalice content

He has a lot of good evidence and back ups for the yharnam/hunters/maria/gehrman/dlc shit, but the more interesting concepts were wasted by him reaching with very little to go by

God I know this feeling dude. I was fighting Laurence with the Moonlight Sword and had no vials left, he was chasing me down and I had like 1hp and I killed him with a fucking charged beam. Felt lightheaded as shit and was nearly about to fucking pass out because of how fucking pumped I was.
