Gaming is big now, but it's now an industry dominated by monetization and appealing to the lowest common denominator. There's no originality, developers with the money to make something great are too afraid of potential losses to bridge into new territory and so we're left with an industry which is stagnant.
The world is willing to accept games as a serious creative medium, but the nature of games has changed to mean they can not be, at least not among the DLC and pre-order culture of the mainstream scene.
Video games were better in the 90's, early 2000's. Back then video games didn't bring in as much money as hollywood and weren't seen as an outlet upon which to get rich, as such it attracted people who had a passion for the medium and a desire to create, rather than being filled with suits as it is now.

There just seems to be a mass producton of mediocre games lately all trying to cash grab in on what's the fotm instead of trying to innovate. When they do try to innovate it's in the sake of "streamelining" and appealing to a larger audience.

Everyone plays games now. But not everyone is the same skill level. So the developers aim for the lowest common denominator. Games become basically Transformer Movies. I expected AAA titles to be like the games of old. Instead I can only get good games from old Indy devs frustrated that the machine won't let them make the games they want. Now I have to finance these devs via kickstarter and 70% of their project bomb so I lose money...
Good thing I still like games like EU4, Stellaris, GalCiv 3 and such...
