Alright /v/ I'm only getting one more game this year. I want something online, should I get SFV or Overwatch? I like both genres and both look fun but I just can't decide. Unfortunately I can only Jew GameStop via discount and coupons for one and one is all I need for my time.

Overwatch is a ton of fun, cheaper on PC, and will give you all dlc for free. You can always grind SFV to get extra fighters yourself, but it takes a month or two of daily play to be able to afford one. I wouldn't recommend SFV unless you have a stick either, it's not as popular as it used to be and nearly everyone who still plays it uses a stick so you'll be at a disadvantage. OW is much easier to start out with but it doesn't have the same level of depth as a SF game (although it is definitely deeper than your average shooter due to hero combinations and how varied the maps are).
I don't think you'd go wrong with either, but I as someone who bought both on day one I'm enjoying Overwatch more than I did SFV, and that's coming from someone who plays fighting games a lot and hasn't played an online FPS since Halo 2.
Wait to see if over watch actually last more than a few weeks before buying it. Not that I'm against the game, but from someone with no interest in getting it, it looks as if it could easily lose staying power.

Both are only good if you have other people to play, but SFV is also only good offline. The netcode is annoyingly inconsistent and the game itself continues to be an overall mess. Overwatch at least is a good game once you have a group to play with.
Then again I was more hyped for SFV than any other game for the past decade so maybe it's just the disappointment talking.

I'm considering getting Overwatch myself. I already have SFV and I was grinding the shit out of that game until I began to realize that it's just not very enjoyable for me. I felt trapped playing my main and didn't really like any of the other characters. Unfortunately there's not much else to do other than fight online games, which isn't really an issue in itself, I'm just sad that I'm not enjoying the gameplay as much anymore. It doesn't help that PS+ ran out and Capcom is still fumbling updates.
I don't like spending money on games very often and Overwatch is tempting, I just don't want to end up in a similar predicament to where I am with Street Fighter because Overwatch doesn't even have custom maps and servers, and there's no telling whether or not we'll ever get those. Should I expect Blizzard to be better about updating OW in the long run compared to Capcom's bullshit?
I prefer SFV but I also enjoy fighting games in general.

If you're going into OW expecting a twitch shooter like CS:GO you'll be disappointed, but if you're debating between OW and SFV I think OW is by far the better option.
Overwatch is weird, the counterpick system and the depth of each hero since you have to have a kill plan for every other hero with everyone you play as, and needing to switch frequently stops you having a "main". It's the easiest shooter to just jump in and play, but it almost feels like a fighting game in all the background stuff. It may seem light on content too, but you can play the same map with the same characters dozens of times and get a completely different experience each time due to how everybody interacts. Each ability has multiple uses too, for example rockets can obviously rocketjump, leaping attacks can be used to cover ground and get to ambush spots, bubble shields can be dropped over turrets to nullify bullets completely/ruin sniper vantage spots, things like that. The more you play the more you'll uncover. It's still casual though so don't expect the best competition in quickplay.

I just wanted to comment on this wrong statement. A stick is only outright best for people that grew up playing on arcades (mexicans). For everyone else, getting good with a pad or with keyboard can provide very similar results. Unless you're using a controller that you absolutely hate, the difference between winning and losing will be in your knowledge and practice with the game and fighting games in general.The optimal setup is a d-pad on left side, arcade buttons on right side.

Keyboards are just as viable as long as you have a decent mechanical one. Shitty budget keyboards can't handle the key combinations for multiple at once, or weird combinations like num3, num6, A and S. Playing with a decent mechanical keyboard is similar to a hitbox, and it's definitely usable (arguably moreso in SFV than any other fighter since it's more based on half circles than 360s/720s)
