Is it common knowledge yet that Rare's downfall was their own fault and not Microsoft's?
>>
>>339530989
They had many key members leave around the early 2000's and Nintendo knew it.

Didn't help that primarily only shooter-dudebros buy Xbox and M$ stuck Rare into Kinect for a while.
>>
It's pretty much down to nobody buying Nuts & Bolts. Nobody gets a second chance after a flop that big.
>>
>>339530989
Stop this meme. The only people who have said this are people in whose interest is it to portray the relationship as a happy one.

Anyone who has ever worked with them and managed to free themselves like Chris Seavor in his dev commentary of Conker has said how horrible it was to work for them. They could have righted themselves after Nuts & Bolts but instead got shafted.

Even Playtonic, half of whose workforce is ex-Rare staff, has made the villain of their game a walking talking parody of Microsoft, with a story about an evil corporation out for profit driving it.
>>
>>339531463
Yeah but my point was that the direction of Nuts & Bolts and most of their other non-Viva PiƱata games was completely their fault and not MS's.

>>339531837
Chris Seavor is the biggest one hit wonder to come out of Rare, and Grant Kirkhope has gone on record saying that the direction of N&B was completely Gregg Mayles's doing.

>Rare contract with Nintendo about to end
>Rare wants them to buy all their shares
>Nintendo believes their asking price to be way too high (C'mon, these are the guys making furry games)
>Microsoft purchases Rare instead
They had some decent stuff on Xbox, and the 360 perfect dark... was amusing.

Then they changed their logo and everything went down the toilet.

Nintendo should have bought up DMA/Rockstar when they had the chance.

Fun fact: Body Harvest for N64 shares a lot of similarities between Ocarina of Time and Smuggler's Run (and later GTA III)

Who the fuck would actually believe this?
>>
>>339530989
Diddy Kong Racing
Banjo Kazooie/Tooie
Donkey Kong 64
Conkers bad fur day
Golden Eye
Perfect Dark

All on the N64, that's more quality games than they've made in 2 and a half generation with Microsoft.
>>
>>339533540
and Nintendo's output on the N64 (even excluding Rare)/GC has more quality than their output on the Wii/Wii U and yet we know that's all their own fault

Why can't it just be accepted that Rare's decline is their own fault? Why does there need to be a scapegoat?

Pictures like that remind me how much expression Nuts & Bolts Banjo had, how much he could emote. I'd say that's about the only advantage he has over the classic design

Rare got frustrated with Nintendo's creative edicts. Miyamoto hated Grabbed By The Ghoulies because every time he complained about the lewd humor and he started using management powers to force them to tone it back. Rare would just add in more to the point Rare were telling him to fuck off. Nintendo didn't like Kameo because they thought it would eat into Pokemon. Dinosaur Planet was Tim Stampers creative vision and he disliked Miyamoto crowbaring in Starfox.

The tipping point was NIntendo cancelling the PAL release of Conker's Bad Fur day after all the carts were manufactured and ready for packaging only three weeks before ship date. The stampers had enough and brought the ultimatum to Nintendo as they cut a last minute deal with THQ for that release of Conker and THQ would have been very happy to pay out for the Stampers shares.

Yamauchi did jack shit because he believed if Activision or THQ did buy it. They were such good partners they would just make Nintendo exclusives with Rare for GC and pump up the Library. No one saw the last minute bid MS put in and it fucked Nintendo's plans to just let THQ foot the bill.

>Nintendo should have bought up DMA/Rockstar when they had the chance.

Nintendo America were close to sealing a deal and Dave Jones (Then owner of DMA) was open to the deal. Then Nintendo found out about GTA and severed ties including the publishing agreements for Silicon Valley and Body Harvest.

Nintendo were interested in Angel Studios as well (The studio who made Smugglers Run). But NCL didn't want NOA gaining power and curtailed their acquisition power (A lot of NOA Production staff left around that time. One of the reasons the GC 1st party got a lot weaker)

>>339533878

People believe what they want to. The only person on the GoldenEye team who worked on Perfect Dark was their Nintendo America producer. Still didn't stop PD from being amazing.
>>
>>339534395
So what you're saying is Microsoft fucked the company and all the good people left?

How far fetched
>>
>>339533953
I honestly like nuts n bolts Banjo.

It's like some low poly high detail shit.

>>339534395
Man that's the biggest shame with the whole Body Harvest deal. At least based Midway picked it up for publishing. I love that game.
>>
>>339534395
>because every time he complained about the lewd humor and he started using management powers to force them to tone it back. Rare would just add in more to the point Rare were telling him to fuck off.
Odd, I wonder why he and the rest of Nintendo were so damn lenient with Conker then
>>
>>339534395
> Dinosaur Planet was Tim Stampers creative vision and he disliked Miyamoto crowbaring in Starfox.

Was it now? From my understanding, Dinosaur Planet/Star Fox Adventures was created by the same team that made Diddy Kong Racing. Both games have the same director, Lee Schuneman.
>>
>>339534713
>So what you're saying is Microsoft fucked the company and all the good people left?

Explain Viva Pinata, nigger

>>339534717

Nintendo had publishing deals with DMA Design (Who became R* North) and Angel Studios (Who became R* San Diego) and cancelled both. Then turned down acquisition opportunities for retarded reasons.

>>339534734

Conker was funded by Rare itself with publisher support from NOA only as Yamauchi was considering giving NOA more autonomy. Same happened with Excitebike 64 and Wave Race Blue Storm. NCL never saw it till the game was pretty much done and they were allegedly furious. Conker was never released in Japan on N64.
>>
>>339535346
>Conker was never released in Japan on N64
Never knew this, then does that just mean Conker didn't exist in Japan until Xbox (which, in and of itself pretty much doesn't exist in Japan)?
>>
>>339535346
>Excitebike
>Wave Race
>1080

Man, what happened to the Nintendo sports games? That's why I loved Wii Sports and Resort so much. It wasn't filled with Mario characters.
>>
>>339535736
We did get Excitetrucks and Excitebots, both really underrated games.
>>
>>339535736
The Wave Race/1080/Metroid Prime Hunters company had a huge and utter disaster (look up Project HAMMER) and as a result, Nintendo sentenced them to a lifetime of nothing but Mario vs. Donkey Kong games
>>
>>339532647
Those who want to believe it will, and those too smart to not believe it won't.
>>
>>339535949

Nintendo also drove away Leftfield Games who did Excitebike and Kobe Bryant Basketball as they didn't want to invest in them any more and LeftField bought independence because they fell out with Nintendo's new "Fuck everything not made in Japan because it's better than what we're making in Japan" phase during the GC

>>339535946

And despite that. Monster Games (Who made those games) were put on 3DS port duty after Pilotwings Resort and now no longer working with Nintendo at all. They recently got an investment from a new Publisher called Dunesberry Martin Racing and making a new NASCAR Heat on PS4/Xbone/PC.

Next Level Games is likely next after Federation Force flops.

>Never knew this, then does that just mean Conker didn't exist in Japan until Xbox (which, in and of itself pretty much doesn't exist in Japan)?
He's lying. It was not only released in Japan but it was advertised far more than in the west.

The Japanese execs love Conker.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-02-08-who-killed-rare

If you bother to read this, it was Microsoft's meetings that killed Rare. Everytime they had a meeting, people would leave and be replaced by Microsoft employees. Rare's downfall was their own because Rare became more Microsoft than Rare.
>>
>>339535346
>Explain Viva Pinata, nigger

The Stampers left after Viva Pinata, thats why.

and they left because Microsoft was pissing them off. By selling their company 100%, they lost control over it.
>>
>>339538041

The stampers wanted to sell since 2001 you dense nigger. Of course they wanted out.

But then people must protect Nintendo's reputation at all costs, even when one of their own third party exclusive studios told em' to fuck off last week
>>
>>339538041
>By selling their company 100%, they lost control over it.
Actually they sold their company 100% because they were READY to get rid of it. They wanted to move on
